Short train rides begin! They will be offered on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays whenever possible.
The Aln Valley Railway (AVR) aims to rebuild the branch line first opened in 1850 linking Alnmouth station to the historic town of Alnwick. This will facilitate access from the East Coast Main Line to a range of major attractions including Alnwick Castle, the Alnwick Garden, Barter Books, and the Bailiffgate Museum.
The project is in four phases, Phase 4 being the final link to Alnmouth Station. In the first year, Phase 1 will involve creating Lionheart Station just off the A1 at the southern approach to Alnwick. The Lionheart site will include an exhibition area, café, shop and an engine maintenance building. The more funds we can raise, the quicker the full line can be opened so please use the café and shop, sponsor a sleeper (see our brochure), and if possible, join the AVR.
In the opposite direction, visitors will be able to travel in style to the coast from a new station, with free parking directly off the A1. A cycle path / footpath alongside the line will link to the National Cycle Network. The railway also has ambitious educational and wildlife conservation objectives.
