Alnmouth Circular
In just 4.5 miles, you’ll discover unspoilt sand dunes, breathtaking coastal views, and tranquil riverside countryside before looping back to the pastel coloured houses of Alnmouth. As one of the best circular walks near Alnwick, it’s an easy route with something for everyone.

The walk starts at Alnmouth Beach Car Park within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (also known as our National Landscapes). The beach and starting point are clearly signposted from the parking place.

Continue along the golden sands of Alnmouth Bay past the Marden Rocks, a sandstone version of the Giant’s Causeway with similar rock formations.

Turn inland at the Fluke Hole near Foxton Hall and cross one of the oldest golf clubs in the country before arriving at the River Aln. This part of the walk can be muddy, so be sure to pack your wellies.

Continue on the Aln river walk until you reach the saltmarsh — watch out for lapwings, redstarts and curlews!

Loop back to Alnwick across the historic Duchess Bridge, or continue along Lovers Lane to the estuary if you’re in a romantic mood.

Explore historical Alnwick
The best place to start your exploration of historic Alnwick is at the Bailiffgate Museum & Gallery, before meandering through the charming streets past the Bondgate Tower.
Explore the mouthwatering goodies on offer at the monthly farmers market, before enjoying a circular walk through nearby Hulne Park. There are clearly signposted paths to suit all abilities, and the park is dog-friendly.
Alternately, test your legs with the Alnwick to Alnmouth route and finish the day with a well-deserved pot of Earl Grey tea at Howick Hall.
You also can’t visit Alnwick without a trip to Alnwick Castle. It’s history on a magnificent scale, bubbling with drama and intrigue. Younger children are sure to recognise Hogwarts and be eager to learn some broomstick skills!
It’s just a three-minute stroll from the castle itself to Alnwick Gardens, the Duchess of Northumberland’s ambitious garden with multiple areas to explore. Younger kids will love Lilidorei, the magical home of the tribes of Christmas, while older kids will enjoy the appeal of the Poison Garden with its toxic plants.
Friends, couples, and families will enjoy the tranquillity of the Cherry Orchard, where you can explore the Japanese art of Hanami or ‘flower viewing’ in Spring time, with the most extensive collection of flowering cherry trees in the UK. It’s a fabulous stroll into a different culture and a great way to enjoy a springtime meander.
