Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle circular walk

Distance: 4 miles / 6.4 km
Duration: 2 hours
Difficulty: Easy

Dunstanburgh Castle is a top attraction for Craster visitors. Surprisingly, what’s left is only an echo of the magnificent castle it once was back in 1313. This Craster to Dunstanburgh circular walk starts at Craster Quarry Car Park and follows along the grassy shorelines of the coastal path — all the way to the ruins.

Keep an eye out for seabirds, wildlife, and livestock as you cross the working farmlands — just remember to keep your well-behaved pup on a lead!

Craster to Low Newton walk

Distance: 7.7 miles / 12.3 km
Duration: 3 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

This lengthy Craster walk will take you from the Craster Quarry Car Park, all the way past Dunstanburgh Castle, and onwards to Embleton Bay and Low Newton-by-the-Sea. From one small fishing village to another, get your camera ready to capture diverse birdlife and white fishermen’s cottages. 

As a well-deserved rest stop, treat yourself by popping into the village’s renowned pub The Ship Inn to enjoy some delicious homemade food. Friendly dogs are very welcome here.

You could even do the Embleton to Craster walk on the way back if you’re a seasoned hiker or fancy a new perspective.

Difficulty: Moderate

Walks around Craster

If you’d rather stay close to your accommodation in Craster, there are a few walking routes available, meaning you never have to stray too far! Craster fishing village is a postcard-perfect Northumberland destination, and a stretch of the legs is the best way to explore what it has to offer.

Craster Village Heritage walk

Distance: 0.5 miles / 0.8km
Duration: 30 to 45 minutes
Difficulty: Very easy

This short and easy walk around Craster can be done on arrival to acquaint yourself with your picturesque surroundings. Start at Craster Quarry Car Park and amble down to the harbour. No harbour trip is complete without a visit to L. Robson & Sons Smokehouse and The Jolly Fisherman pub for the freshest seafood!

After a refuel, head over to the Craster Lifeboat Station (which has been in action since 1969) and then finish with a view of Craster Tower, a defensive retreat that acted as a safe haven for locals during border raids.

Craster and Howick circular walk

Distance: 7.5 miles / 12km
Duration: 3 to 4 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

This satisfying walk from Craster to Howick will take you along the coastal path for stunning views of the North Sea and towards the basalt cliffs at Cullernose Point, before arriving at the historical Howick village. Ideal for geology lovers and nature fanatics.

On the way back, enjoy an off-the-beaten-track adventure through farmland paths and countryside trails back to the Craster Village starting point.
