Walking in a winter Northumberland
There’s snow place like Northumberland in winter, where fairy lights line the cobbled streets of our market towns and sparkling frost makes our scenic landscapes even more magical. Escape the cold by warming your toes in your own cottage or one of the many cosy pubs with a crackling open fire and join our festive celebrations.
Grab your woollies, layer up and head out for a crisp walk in Northumberland. Be swept up by our stunning coastal views and blow away the cobwebs on a blustery beach walk, or venture to the countryside for idyllic views of snow-topped hills, sparkling leaves, frost-tipped trees in our vast forests and ice-glazed streams.
When the sun sets in the winter months, the county’s darkest, clearest skies of the year create the perfect canvas for a spot of stargazing. Head to one of our observatories for an evening with the experts, or stargaze from your car by driving to a Dark Sky Discovery Site with a flask, warm clothes and a pair of binoculars at the ready.
Attempt ice skating, visit Santa in his log cabins and grottos across the county and be mesmerised by the magic of Christmas markets and a whole host of Northumberland’s winter events. Seal the winter season with a fiery celebration at Tar Bar’l, Northumberland’s famous New Year fire festival held in Allendale.
