The best walks in Kielder Forest
Spanning 250 square miles (650 km²), Kielder Forest is the largest manmade forest in England, and it offers a whole host of beautiful walking trails. With so much to explore, it can be tough knowing where to start!

Dukes Trail
Distance: 1 mile/ 1.6km
Difficulty: Easy
If you’re looking for an accessible walk around Kielder Forest, Dukes Trail is the ideal route. It offers a delightful stroll through the woodland alongside Kielder Castle.
Although there are some slight inclines, the first section of the walk has been created with wheelchairs and buggies in mind, making a lovely option for families and wheelchair users.
The Gruffalo Trail
Distance: 1.5 miles/ 2.4km
Difficulty: Easy
Another family-friendly Kielder Castle and Forest walk is the Gruffalo Trail — a wonderful way to keep little ones entertained. Featuring stunning wooden sculptures of Julia Donaldson’s much-loved characters, this trail is full of surprises. Skyspace Walk
Distance: 2.6 miles/ 4.2km
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
With a route starting near Kielder Castle, the Skyspace Walk is a tranquil trail with an almost otherworldly feel. You’ll follow a winding path through dense forest and gradually ascend a hillside, leading up towards a captivating art installation.
The Kielder Skyspace is a sculpture by renowned American artist James Turrell. You can step inside and look up at the open oculus, which frames the sky. Visit at dusk, and you can enjoy the atmospheric effect of LED lighting for an immersive experience.
Walks around Kielder Water
There’s something very special about waterside walks. From the chance to spot bats, herons, and other wildlife, to the peaceful rhythm of the water lapping at the shore, every step offers a moment of connection with nature.
Kielder Water is the largest man-made reservoir in Europe. It’s a huge draw for holiday makers and visitors heading to Kielder Forest, and it’s easy to see why. Kielder Lakeside Way
Distance: Up to 26 miles/ 41.8km
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging, with some easier sections
Kielder Water’s shoreline follows 26 miles of sparkling reservoir. If you’re feeling adventurous, go the whole hog and explore the entire expanse, known as Kielder Lakeside Way.
Along the route, you can see artwork, and pop into various nature hides to see what wildlife you can spot — red squirrels and ospreys are known to frequent the area.
The Bull Crag Circular Walk
Distance: 6 miles/ 9.6km
Difficulty: Easy
Don’t fancy the whole 26 miles? Don’t worry - you can do a lovely 6-mile trail that starts and ends at Kielder Waterside. This section of the Lakeside Way is on the edge of the Bull Crag peninsula and features very well-maintained paths suitable for walkers of all levels.
Take in panoramic views of Kielder reservoir and enjoy passing through sections of serene woodland.
