Visit England New Tourism Business of the Year 2025
Ad Gefrin is the first of its kind, bringing together a contemporary museum with a pioneering Whisky Distillery at the gateway to the Cheviot Hills in Wooler. We celebrate the best of Northumbria – both the Golden Age, through the archaeology of the 7th century royal palace discovered just four miles from us, and the rich produce of the region today, from barley for our Single Malt to local suppliers for our bistro and shop.
Ad Gefrin celebrates the Golden Age of Northumbria, offering visitors a timeless journey back to the 7th-century summer palace of the Northumbrian Kings and Queens, discovered only four miles from Wooler, where we are located. In our re-imagined Great Hall, step into the life of the court and discover the lives, stories and personalities of the people of the time brought to life through film. Our museum showcases archaeologically important artefacts of the period, both from the original site and on loan from leading international museums and collections, including the Gefrin Trust, British Museum, and Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.
Sitting in the heart of some of the finest barley-producing country in the world, with five named local farmers growing exclusively for Ad Gefrin, England’s northernmost whisky distillery, benefits from pure Cheviot water pumped up from beneath the distillery. Tours follow the full journey from the arrival of the grain to the maturing of the filled casks and end with the chance to taste our award-winning spirits - Tácnbora Blended Whisky, Flyte Whisky Cream, and Thirlings Dry Gin - under the expert guidance of our Alchemists.
Finish a visit with a glass of something special on the terrace or around the fire, or by sharing a meal from our bistro, featuring often familiar dishes and local favourites, presented in new and inspired ways for the sheer love of food from Northumberland. Then just before you go, nip into our Shop to find unusual gifts from some of the finest designer makers, both from the local area and further afield, so that you can take a little bit of Ad Gefrin home with you, as well as a bottle of whisky!
Access to the public areas of Ad Gefrin, named North East Building of the Year 2025, is free. This includes Bēodern (Old English for Dining Hall), which celebrates local, seasonal produce, and our unique gift shop featuring locally made products and high-quality gifts.
