The team at Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth are preparing for their biggest event of the year – the centre’s Christmas Lights Switch On which takes place on Saturday November 19th.

The fun starts at 2:30pm with a packed line up of competitions and entertainment throughout the afternoon; the fantastic Christmas lights will be switched on at 5pm followed by a festive fireworks display.

The crowds will be treated to a special performance by the 2015 X Factor finalist Kiera Weathers who will also be joined by a host of special guests to perform the big switch on – the afternoon’s entertainment is supported by Stratstone Tyneside BMW.

The Morpeth Tree of Light will also be illuminated at the event to mark the start of the Christmas fundraising appeal.

The money raised will be shared between the Mayor’s Charity, Contact Mental Health, the Children’s Heart Unit at The Freeman Hospital and the Arcade’s chosen charity for 2017 which is St Cuthbert’s Care – The Alan Shearer Foundation.

Rhona Dunn, the founder of the Morpeth Tree of Light will be on hand to help with the switch on along with Kiera Weathers and Lainya Shearer of the Alan Shearer Foundation.

Father Christmas and Heart FM’s breakfast presenters Justin and Kelly will also be entertaining the crowd and a special festive performance from the pupils of Morpeth All Saints School is planned for 3pm.

Shoppers will have the opportunity to win a fabulous £500 shopping spree and the busy event will feature Santa’s grotto in the new terrace area outside Morpeth Larder which will also host seasonal food stalls. Santa and Mrs Claus will be in the grotto from 1:30pm to 4:30pm.

The festive lights display will this year include the new development neighbouring the Arcade where Next, Pets at Home and Home Bargains opened earlier this year.

Centre manager at Sanderson Arcade Medi Parry said: “We are delighted to have the support of Stratstone Tyneside BMW again this year who are a fantastic partner in our Christmas Lights event and help us make this a really special event for the whole town.

“This is always our biggest event of the year and we have a great line up planned to get the Christmas season off to a fantastic start.”

The Switch On event also marks the Arcade’s 7th birthday. The centre was officially opened in November 2009 by Joanna Lumley OBE.
