English Country House weekend!

sprite75, London, United Kingdom
If you spend far too much time watching Miss Marple, this is the house for you. While here, we genuinely felt that we had gone back in time to visit friends in the country--I almost to see a uniformed housemaid bobbing around with the tea tray. The house is well-located for visits to Bamburgh, The Holy Island, Alnwick, coastal walks, and several historic properties. Room facilities are good, although the wifi struggles to get through the thick walls (very good signal in sitting room) and you won't find power showers here. The beds are the star attraction--I have ongoing back problems, but the bed was so comfortable, i woke pain-free each morning. This, combined with the country quiet and dark skies makes for a truly refreshing sleep. We enjoyed chatting with other guests around the sitting room fire, and over delicious breakfasts. Would recommend to anyone for a relaxing few days, but especially for international visitors wanting that special "English" experience.

Budle Hall replied: Thank you very much for your kind comments. You are right about the dark skies and country quiet. We are delighted you enjoyed Northumberland and Budle - come and see us again!

Felt like home

Rosemary B, Nantwich, United Kingdom
Such a fabulous find, first time at Budle but not the last. Ralph and Celia welcomed us so sincerely into their home. Our 11 year old daughter was invited to chill out with their children and other family members, so relaxing and friendly. Beautiful large rooms, lovely food, and very helpful but unobtrusive hosts. The odd faded chintz and plumbing difficulty just made the house smile - if you want clinical perfection there are plenty of Premier Inns about.

Budle Hall replied: We are so glad that you felt welcome at Budle - you are! We hope you will come back some time.

My favourite B&B in England, home from home

I’ve been coming to Budle for over 10 years (including under previous management). It is an enchanting, timeless house with a very happy atmosphere. Owners Ralph and Celia and their charming young team could not be more welcoming. Breakfasts are delicious and the beautiful location is convenient for both Bamburgh and Holy Island. Do bear in mind that whilst architecturally stunning, comfortable and cosy Budle is not trying to be a seven star boutique hotel in shades of grey and beige! To me it has always felt like good value and the warm welcome is priceless.

Budle Hall replied: Thank you very much for your kind comments. We're delighted you enjoy staying here and look forward to welcoming you again.

Don't enter the Red Room

Scott M,
When booking the Red Room was the last remaining room. We were undeterred by the fact that at £100 a night we still expected a certain degree of quality. Whereas the Hall as a whole was interesting even atmospheric the Red Room experience didn't live up to the rest of the experience. We were met by the lady of the house a lovely cup of tea by the fire in the lounge and splendid homemade shortbreads. Good start. The house feels like a home. You are surrounded by books, Art, knick knacks of every type which seem to fit together comfortably. Grand pianos, sweeping staircases balanced by the homely normality of a shelf of DVDs for guest use. (The Danish Girl ....we very much enjoyed) The problem is mainly the Red Room itself. Shabby furniture. Not chic. Just shabby.( the bed was comfortable) But the main problem.....the bathroom down the corridor. Paying £200 for the weekend (we had to book two nights. One wasn't an option) we feel we were entitled to a working shower. It trickled just two temperatures. Cold or "poaching" We could have had bath. But the mildewed tiling distracted from the comfort. The "family home feel" was embedded by the two young boys playing football on the afore mentioned sweeping staircase. Breakfast was good if initially slightly uncomfortable in its refectory style, long wobbly table, sitting next to strangers feel. By the end of the second breakfast we found out they were all very nice and enjoyed our conversation tearing the University Fees and school funding atrocities situation apart. We were seen off by the front entrance with the patron clutching twenty crisp £10 notes, crunched across the pebble drive and felt overall a bit "done". And dirty as we avoided the Sunday morning bathroom experience choosing to wait until we were home.

Budle Hall replied: We are glad you enjoyed the comfortable beds, the afternoon tea in front of the log fire, the customer service, the overall ambiance and the conversation over breakfast with other guests. We are sorry the room and bathroom did not meet your expectations. We always prefer it when guests let us know if there is a problem whilst they are staying - in this case we had another room available. However, we would love to welcome you again and will do everything we can to accommodate you. Please let us know by email when you book in again: visit@budlehall.com

Must book it!

A fantastic place to stay in a beautiful location. Very clean and comfortable with an excellent choice for breakfast which was cooked brilliantly and served with the same high level of customer service as everything was given. The hosts are fantastic with nothing too much trouble. They will even drop you off at your local pub of choice for an evening meal and pick you up again with no charge. They also offer free tea, coffee and cake in the afternoon. I cannot emphasise enough the high level of customer service and the care they take to make your stay so enjoyable. I can guarantee that if you stay here once you will rebook, we certainly will! Mike & Jean, Batley, West Yorkshire.
