Get ready to see the extraordinary – all from your X18 bus seat

Arriva’s X18 bus isn’t just any ride. It’s a chance to experience stunning views usually reserved for scenic tours.

It’s a regular bus route, but with beautiful benefits. It’s a front-row seat to Northumberland’s awe-inspiring scenery, where every mile reveals a sight more stunning than the last. Running between Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed, this Arriva bus route winds along stunning coastline, offering sea views, historic castles and charming seaside villages. Whether you're a history lover, nature enthusiast, or simply looking to explore
Northumberland’s beauty, the X18 is perfect.

Arriva’s X18 departs Newcastle’s Haymarket bus station up to six times a day from Monday to Saturday and three times on Sundays. As you leave the city behind, the landscape transforms into some of England’s most dramatic coastal views.

The first stop is Amble, known as the friendliest port in England, where you can enjoy local seafood, watersports, and charming shops, all set around its award-winning marina. The X18 then passes through quaint seaside villages. One of the most charming stops is Warkworth, a postcard-perfect village, with Warkworth Castle towering above it.

One of the route’s major highlights is Alnwick, home to the magnificent Alnwick Castle. The medieval fortress, once the seat of the powerful Percy family, is now world-famous for its role as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films. Fans can step inside the castle’s courtyards and wander through the spectacular The Alnwick Garden.

Next stop is Craster, a fishing village renowned for its kippers—smoked in the same way for over a century. A stop here offers the perfect opportunity to sample this local delicacy. Continuing north, you’ll see sweeping views of the North Sea from Arriva’s X18 bus windows, until the tranquil village of Beadnell - home to the only west-facing harbour on England’s east coast – fabulous for sunset views. Just beyond, lies Seahouses, a lively hub and gateway to the Farne Islands, where visitors can take boat trips to see puffins, seals and
other wildlife, or stay and enjoy some traditional fish and chips.

Perhaps the most jaw-dropping moment of the journey is the approach to Bamburgh Castle. Perched on a rocky outcrop above miles of golden sands, it was once the home of the ancient kings of Northumbria. Today, visitors can explore its grand halls, enjoy views of the Farne Islands and learn about Grace Darling, the Victorian heroine who braved stormy seas to rescue shipwrecked sailors.

Continuing north, the X18 bus offers unbeatable views of Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne. Accessible only via a tidal causeway, the island is home to Lindisfarne Castle and Lindisfarne Priory, the site of the Viking raid of 793 AD. Even if you don’t get off the bus at this point, seeing this dramatic landscape unfold from the bus window is a moment to
    savour.

Beyond its stunning views and historical landmarks, the X18 provides a convenient and eco-friendly alternative to driving. With frequent services and affordable fares, visitors can explore without the hassle of car parking charges or the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads. Instead of focusing on driving, passengers can simply sit back and take in the scenery.

At just £6 for a multi-operator day ticket, this journey is not only a bargain but also a step towards sustainable travel, helping to reduce congestion and protect the unspoiled beauty of the North East coastline.

Whether you're a visitor discovering Northumberland for the first time or a local looking for a fresh way to explore, the X18 bus is an experience in itself. With castles, coastal walks, wildlife, and beautiful views, this route proves that the journey is just as important as the destination.
