To celebrate the tercentenary of Thomas Chippendale's birth, Chippendale 300 is a nationwide celebration of events inspired by the life, work and legacy of Thomas Chippendale, the most famous and influential furniture maker Britain has ever produced. Paxton House holds one of the world's largest collections of Chippendale furniture. Our Nationally Significant collection was awarded Recognition status by Museums Galleries Scotland, on behalf of the Scottish Government, in 2017. The Paxton Style: 'Neat & Substantially Good' was developed by Thomas Chippendale to suit the preferences of two of Paxton’s patrons; Patrick Home (1728 – 1808) and Ninian Home (1732 – 1795).
The collection combines relatively plain but innovative furniture forms with superb quality mahogany cuts and veneers. This personality was concisely defined by Ninian Home in a letter to Chippendale, written from Paxton in June 1789, in which he described what he wanted as ‘neat and substantially good’. The Paxton Style can be seen as a distinct family of furniture within Thomas Chippendale’s repertoire and is quite different from the productions of the elder Chippendale’s earlier career. It features restrained enrichment rather than ostentatious carving and gilding (which can be found in many other large stately homes around Scotland and England). The Paxton Style has enjoyed an enduring legacy that has influenced the design of mahogany furniture that followed.
The exhibition itself is free of charge but you will need to buy a Paxton House Grounds pass which is £5 for adults 16 and over and free for children under 16.

A female lobster can carry 20,000 eggs under her body for over 9 months and after all that effort only one egg will survive to adulthood. We think she needs a little help! At the hatchery we take local female lobsters carrying eggs (known as berried hens) and capture the eggs as she releases them. The really dangerous time for young lobsters in the sea is the first few weeks after hatching when they are a tasty treat for many other sea creatures. We keep the lobster larvae protected in our tanks and release them when they are safe to return to the sea, then they can burrow into the seabed to hide from things that might eat them.
The hatchery has been set up to be as interactive, informative and engaging as possible for all ages. Visitors can observe the whole process from the eggs hatching to the young lobsters being ready for release. Kids can get hands on experience with our touch tank where our hatchery guides can introduce you to some local creatures.
Come along to the Northumberland Seafood Centre and Hatchery to learn about the lifecycle of a lobster. We have a few lobster related gifts for you to take home too! Or you can combine your visit with a trip to our fresh bar and take home some tasty fish, or even a lobster for your tea! We’re open 7 days per week during peak season from 10am to 4pm. (Please refer to our website for opening times outside this period).
