New Art Installation Crowns Everyday Royalty in Berwick
Visitors to Berwick-upon-Tweed will be able to crown themselves king or queen as part of a new interactive art installation inspired by the town’s tradition of crowning the Tweed Salmon Queen.
Taking place from Saturday 11 to Thursday 16 July, Our Wic - which takes its name from the Anglo Saxon word for ‘dwelling’ - invites people to perform their own coronation and lay claim to their territory by donning the Our Wic crown.
Created by artist Lucy Wright and produced by contemporary arts agency Arts&Heritage, Our Wic celebrates the long tradition of crowning kings and queens of industry across the North of England. It also coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Tweed Salmon Queen celebrations in the town (17-19 July) - an annual tradition first established to celebrate the town’s rich salmon fishing heritage.
Running alongside the installation is an exhibition of photography depicting six new ‘kings and queens’ from the town; local residents who help make the town what it is today. Each person is photographed wearing one of six bespoke crowns created by local artists (see full details below).
WHAT:The Straw Yard in Berwick will be transformed into an elaborate throne room where visitors can don a bronze Our Wic crown created by Lucy Wright, sculpted using textures and symbols from Berwick’s buildings and landscapes. An official photograph will be taken to mark each coronation and the name of the newly created territory will be displayed on digital screens inside the throne room - a nod to the town’s unique position in the Debatable Lands, an area historically disputed and subject to multiple changes of identity across time.
Next door in Holy Trinity Church, an exhibition of photography will showcase Berwickers who have been nominated by members of the community as everyday royalty of the town. Each one is photographed wearing one of six bespoke crowns created by local artists.
Some of the everyday royalty of Berwick include:
Eva Simpson from malt manufacturer Simpsons Malt, who is pictured wearing a crown by basket maker, Anna Corbett.
Brenda Collins, who has worked at The Free Trade Pub in the town since 1971, is photographed in an ornate stained-glass crown created by David Purvis of Condottieri Glass
Roz Haddrill from The Green Shop, an independent eco-friendly store that has traded in Berwick for more than 30 years, wears a crown created by Jennie Howes from Jennie’s Wool Studio.
Lyndsey Morris from Pith Papers, a new business established in 2020 that represents Berwick’s hundreds year-old print industry, is pictured wearing a crown created by Lucy Baxandall of Tidekettle Paper.
Annaluisa Wood from Berwick Infirmary wears a crown by Deborah Boyd Whyte.
John Skelly from butchers W.R. Skelly & Son, which at 266 years old holds the title of the longest-running family business in Berwick-upon-Tweed, is photographed wearing a crown by Suzanne Wright.
Other everyday royalty of the town will be featured in a special publication and on the official Our Wic instagram page (www.instagram.com/ourwicproject).
Artist Lucy Wright said: "I've always had an interest in the northern British tradition of crowning kings and queens of industry, like the Tweedmouth Salmon Queen, which has a long history in the town.
“For me, these ‘community crownings’ are examples of how we celebrate each other and claim our own heroes and heroines in the places where we live. Our Wic is about the people of Berwick paying tribute to their own kings and queens, from all sections of society; the people who make the town what it is today.”
Andrea Oliver, Create Berwick Manager, said: “Our Wic is the second of three annual art commissions funded by Create Berwick that demonstrates why our small border town is one of the most distinctive cultural destinations in the country.
“As well as attracting visitors to Berwick-upon-Tweed and raising the town’s profile as a thriving hub for arts and culture, Our Wic has also created opportunities for local artists and creatives; further strengthening the cultural industries in the town.
“Our Wic has helped grow the skills of our creative economy; inspire more people to pursue careers in the arts; and galvanise our cultural and creative businesses to deliver more cultural experiences in the town that demonstrate why Berwick-upon-Tweed is a cultural and creative powerhouse.”
Our Wic takes place at The Straw Yard and Holy Trinity Church in Berwick-upon-Tweed from Saturday 11 to Thursday 16 July 2026. The exhibition and interactive installation are both open from 11am-6pm daily. The event is free (booking required). Tickets go on sale from Friday 05 June. For more information, visit createberwick.co.uk/our-wic.
Our Wic is commissioned and funded by Create Berwick, Northumberland County Council, and the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority.
Create Berwick is one of three Culture and Creative Zones (CCZs) in the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority area (including Newcastle and North Shields) established to support the growth of the cultural and creative industries. Create Berwick is funded by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority and Northumberland County Council. Regenerating Berwick-upon-Tweed through cultural investment and innovation, Create Berwick’s work includes providing affordable workspace for creative people and businesses, skills development, business support and financial incentives, community and audience engagement, and raising the profile of Berwick as a destination for arts, culture, and creativity.

February is the perfect time to admire snowdrops at various attractions, especially if you're looking for a romantic Valentine's Day in Northumberland:
Howick Hall - Visit the stunning Snowdrop Festival during February and enjoy winter woodland walks through carpets of Snowdrops at Howick Hall. They are planted in large drifts throughout the garden, often with winter aconites, and make a beautiful display reminding us that spring isn’t far away.
Belsay Hall - See the spectacular snowdrops at Belsay Hall, where snowdrops give a spectacular display in the quarry garden and woodland floor. Along with the common snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis, the double-flowered species of Galanthus nivalis 'Flore Pleno' can be seen. The taller Galanthus 'Sam Arnott' can be found in the winter garden.
Wallington House - Visit Wallington Hall to enjoy the snowdrops in their beautiful gardens. If you have kids, explore the Snowdrop Festival Fairy Trail and wander through the East Woods where fairy doors are tucked beneath mossy logs, nestled inside hollow trees, and hidden in secret woodland nooks.
Ford and Etal - Beside Etal Castle lies an abundance of snowdrops flowering in the nearby copse. Snowdrops can also be found along Etal’s riverside path and on walks around Ford Village, where keen-eyed visitors may even spot a few early primroses.

Grace Darling’s Shawl Donated to RNLI Museum
The beautiful buff-coloured shawl, delicately embroidered with silk shells and scrolls along its border, went under the hammer at Anderson & Garland auctioneers in Newcastle in October. It sold to an individual bidder, Mr Heath St John from Bromley in London, for £820.The quality and condition of the shawl suggests it was treasured but rarely worn – thought to be one of the many gifts Grace and William Darling received for their bravery in rescuing survivors from the wrecked SS Forfarshire in 1838.The team at the Grace Darling Museum – which is run by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) – were overjoyed when Mr St John offered to donate the shawl to the museum’s collection. The piece goes on display from today, Thursday 18 December, a fitting conclusion to the year of Grace Darling’s 210th birthday.

The daughter of a lighthouse keeper, Grace Darling captured the imagination of Victorian society when she and her father William risked their lives to rescue nine survivors from the wrecked SS Forfarshire on 7 September 1838. Aged 22, Grace helped William row their wooden coble out to the stricken paddle steamer, and held it steady in the waves as he pulled survivors aboard.
Her extraordinary act of bravery became internationally known, making front page news and even reaching Queen Victoria. She became the media celebrity of her day and was showered with honours, including the RNLI's Silver Medal for Gallantry.

Well-wishers from around the world became competitive about sending Grace and her family a raft of gifts. They ranged from the practical to the ornate – status symbols prized by high society but of little relevance to the Darlings’ modest way of life on the Farne Islands. The museum’s collection holds a range of these gifts, from sewing sets to a glass walking stick.
Following Grace’s death from tuberculosis just 4 years after the famous rescue, gifts and mementoes would have been shared around the family and sold off from time to time to settle debts. The auction lot came with a typed letter of provenance to Mr Ernest William Greenwood, publisher Greenwood Bros Printers Ltd, South Shields. It refers to the shawl ‘belonging Grace Darling, (note), this article belongs to the late George Barclay's estate’. The shawl was being held by Greenwood as collateral against a book to be published.
The donor had initially hoped the shawl could go on display in Grace’s former home, Longstone Lighthouse, but ultimately chose the RNLI charity’s Grace Darling Museum, where more regulated temperature and light conditions will help preserve this precious piece of Grace’s story for generations to come.
Visitors to the museum will see the shawl take its place alongside other gifts the Darling family received, and some of Grace’s daily clothing. These include shorter, more practical shawls and part of the blue and white striped dress she wore during the rescue.
Andrew Lewis, RNLI Heritage Development Manager, said: ‘Seeing this shawl come home to Bamburgh and go on display at Christmas is a gift to all the volunteers at the Grace Darling Museum. They give so much time and care to bring the story of this unassuming heroine to life.‘This new addition to our collection gives a fascinating insight into the experiences of Grace Darling after the rescue – and the rather romanticised view Victorian society had of her daily life.‘It’s unusual for us to acquire a new item with such a close connection to Grace. So we’re looking forward to welcoming new visitors to see this beautiful piece, and researching more about its provenance.’Explaining his interest in the piece, the donor Mr Heath St John [pronounced sinjun] said: ‘Important though names and dates are, they don't offer any tactile, you might even say emotional, involvement. They don't stimulate any human sympathy, however mentally stimulating they might be.‘I think in recent decades the daily ephemera of life, the curious, the quaint, have come to be felt as a more authentic way of trying to understand past peoples, and hence our own place in the natural order of things, which for me makes life more purposeful.‘It feels very gratifying to see the shawl go on display. I hope it will bring the story of Grace and William Darling’s bravery to many new generations.’This story is being shared as part of the RNLI’s Christmas Appeal. A Magical New Chapter in the World of Lilidorei
The Duchess of Northumberland (Jane Northumberland) has officially released the first book in The Legends of Lilidorei series. Amanita is a spellbinding children’s story that brings the inhabitants of Lilidorei, the magical play village, to life for the very first time.
Set in the enchanting world of Lilidorei, close to The Alnwick Garden, Amanita follows the adventures of a young girl who discovers a realm filled with magic, mushrooms, and mayhem.
Published alongside a companion title, An Illustrated Guide to Lilidorei, the books invite readers to uncover the stories and secrets that lie behind the world’s largest play structure and one of the North East’s most beloved family attractions.
Speaking of her new novel, Jane said: “When I began to create Lilidorei, its story and inhabitants were alive in my mind, long before the village existed in reality.
“I designed the attraction, with its winding paths and hidden houses, to encourage children to immerse themselves in their imagination. My hope is that these novels will fuel this even further.
“Both Amanita and An Illustrated Guide to Lilidorei help to explain the magic that visitors have always sensed when they visit Lilidorei. The books reveal what its clans look like, how they live, and why the village is so special to them.
“I want readers to understand that Lilidorei is more than just a playground; it’s a living story, and now, through these books, everyone can be part of it,” she continued.
The launch of Amanita marks an exciting new chapter for Lilidorei, blending storytelling and play to create a truly immersive experience. By sharing the imaginative origins of the village’s clans, The Duchess invites readers to step beyond the gates of Lilidorei and into its hidden world, where adventure and imagination intertwine.
Amanita (£8.99) and An Illustrated Guide to Lilidorei (£6.99) are also available as a beautiful gift bundle for £14.99, available to purchase now. To find out more, please visit: https://alnwickgardenshop.com/product/gift-book-bundle-pre-order/

First Seal Pups Born on the Farne Islands
First seal pups born on the Farne Islands kicks off annual grey seal survey
The first grey seal pups of the year have been born on the Farne Islands, marking the start of the annual seal pupping season and the National Trust’s monitoring efforts
National Trust’s rangers will use drone technology to conduct more accurate and less intrusive surveys of the growing grey seal population
The Farne Islands remain a vital sanctuary for wildlife, with over 3000 seal pups expected this season, highlighting the importance of ongoing conservation work
The first grey seal pups of the season have been born on the remote Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast marking the beginning of the annual seal survey at one of England’s most important island wildlife habitats.
The first pup was spotted on Blue Caps near Longstone Lighthouse in October and pupping season is now in full swing with pups on the beach on Inner Farne, heralding the start of a busy few months for National Trust rangers as thousands of adult grey seals haul up onto the shingle/rocky beaches to find a good place to give birth. The Farne Islands is home to one of the largest grey seal colonies on the east coast of England, with around 3,000 pups born each autumn.
Sophia Jackson, Area Ranger for the National Trust on the Farne Islands, said:
"The arrival of the first pup is always a special moment. It signals the start of our seal monitoring season and reminds us of the importance of the Farnes as a sanctuary for wildlife. This annual monitoring is especially important given that the Islands have the world’s longest running dataset for monitoring this particular species – with a project that began in 1952 by Grace Hickling MBE, a pioneering ornithologist and naturalist whose lifelong dedication to the Farne Islands helped shape modern conservation efforts in Northumberland.
“Each pup born here is a testament to the conservation work we do and the resilience of this species in the face of environmental challenges particularly due to rising temperatures and warming seas."
This year’s survey continues the use of drone technology, working with Dr Richard Beavan from Newcastle University, to count seal pups more accurately and with minimal disturbance. The drones allow rangers to monitor even the most remote islands and to analyse images quickly and efficiently.
Tom Hendry, fellow Area Ranger, added:
"The sighting of the first pup triggers the start of our count, and we’re curious to see if the upward trend in pup numbers continues from 3443 pups in 2019 to 3624 in 2024. The drone gives us an excellent view of the islands and helps us detect pups that might otherwise be missed. It’s a game-changer for how we monitor this growing population."
The Farne Islands are cared for by the National Trust and are a designated National Nature Reserve. They are internationally recognised for their significance to seabirds and marine mammals, including the Atlantic grey seal.
The seal survey will continue through the autumn, with rangers facilitating pup counts every four days, weather permitting, so that drone images can be compared to work out the maximum number of pups present.
Once the count is complete, the data will be analysed by Newcastle University, with results expected next spring.
