Explore the great outdoors this May with the National Trust

With spring flowers in full bloom, warmer weather on the way and those extra days off to enjoy, May is the ideal time to get outdoors and discover some amazing coast and countryside locations.

This May you can scale the rocks that formed part of Roman Britain’s most northerly border, check out the sea life on our beautiful and often secluded coastline, or see if you can cut it in the campfire kitchen down in the woods.

Spend half term with the National Trust who have a list of 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾ with adventures at some unforgettable places. What’s more, every single visit helps support the charity’s work looking after special places for ever, for everyone.

Top 50 things activities this half term in the North East:

  1. No. 46 – Try Rock Climbing

    If you’re aged 8 or over, join us for an adventure rock climbing at Crag Lough on Hadrian’s Wall on Sunday 25 May. Learn about movement skills, harnesses and climbing calls.

  2. No. 37 – check out the crazy creatures in a Rockpool

    Head to the coast for a number of rock pooling events at Souter Lighthouse & The Leas, Lindisfarne Castle and Embleton & Newton Links. Hunt for crabs, sea urchins, lobster and maybe even a small fish or two.

  3. No.36 - Make a home for a wild animal

    Come along to the Nuttery at Washington Old Hall from 25 to 28 May for lots of nature investigations and to learn how to build an insect habitat.

  4. No. 45 - Find your way with a map and compass

    Join us at Wallington on Wednesday 28 May for our orienteering challenge where you will learn how to use a map and compass through the grounds.

  5. No. 47 - Cook on a campfire

    Join our Ranger Bushcraft day at Allen Banks on Wednesday 28 May where you can learn loads of woodland skills including cooking n a campfire. Or pop over to Wallington for our 50 things weekend of activities on the 25 and 26 May and see if you can cut it in the campfire kitchen.
