Overview

Visitors to Corbridge Roman Town can walk along the main street of this Roman garrison town, flanked by the remains of granaries, a fountain house, markets, workshops and temples.

Astride the intersection of Roman Dere Street and Stanegate, Corbridge was initially the site of a series of important forts. But after Hadrian's Wall was fully commissioned it developed into a prosperous town, a tempting leave-centre for off-duty Wall garrisons.

Today, you can still walk through the town's streets and experience a time-capsule of Roman life. You can also discover Roman armour and trinkets uncovered with the Corbridge Hoard at the museum. The Hoard was one of the most significant finds in Roman history, providing us with a fascinating insight into the life of a soldier on the Wall. The museum is also home to the Corbridge Collection, the largest of the Hadrian's Walls collections.

Fascinating

How can you live in a place virtually all your life and be unaware of Corbridge Roman Town!!!!! That's me!!! Visited this fascinating place only weeks ago and was amazed at the size and preservation of the walls and houses. The site is set out so the visitor can walk down the main street ( stangate) and enter the houses and military quarters. Ancient history brought to life. It is well worth making a detour to see if you are visiting the area.

Mind-blowing remains of a Roman settlement

Rob K, Thornton Cleveleys, United Kingdom
This English Heritage site just outside Corbridge really brings Britain’s Roman history to life. Genuine remains of a Roman road and a settlement with a vast complex of buildings, some as yet still concealed beneath the surrounding fields. The visitor centre contains a museum of artifacts found on and around the site and the free audio guide is informative and helpful. Small number of free on-site parking bays, dog friendly. An amazing Roman ruin of an entire town

Knitter8, London, United Kingdom
This is well worth a visit. The ruin is large with lots of different aspects of a town including the ruin of a large granary and a fountain. The museum has been recently done up and is English Heritage. There is a free audio tour with it. You can reach it from Corbridge by walking along the river but it is outside the village of Corbridge by about a mile and a half by car.

Fascinating, impressive Roman site

Albatros513, Baslow, United Kingdom
We visited in July 2018. Admission and parking are free to English Heritage members. We joined the free guided tour which was excellent and we would recommend this, it provides an insight and understanding of the site and it’s history. The remains here are very impressive, as is the display in the visitor centre which includes a timeline which is really helpful to understand the development and history of Roman Corbridge. Altogether a very enjoyable visit. Recommended.

Great site and interesting museum

pad4535, north luffenham
We stoped here as our road north ran past Corbridge and we had some time to spare before getting where we needed to be. That being said I would say that this is a site worth making a trip to visit. A small well laid out museum with something for everyone, I loved the glass flasks and the carving of the boar. My husband loved the armour. The site didn’t look that big to start with but given you can wander everywhere, there is plenty to see. We free styled and didn’t take the free audio set which probably wasn’t the right choice but the boards dotted around gave us a sense of what we were looking at. This is a dog friendly site as most EH sites and also as with most EH sites the staff are friendly and helpful
