Overview

Visitors to Corbridge Roman Town can walk along the main street of this Roman garrison town, flanked by the remains of granaries, a fountain house, markets, workshops and temples.

Astride the intersection of Roman Dere Street and Stanegate, Corbridge was initially the site of a series of important forts. But after Hadrian's Wall was fully commissioned it developed into a prosperous town, a tempting leave-centre for off-duty Wall garrisons.

Today, you can still walk through the town's streets and experience a time-capsule of Roman life. You can also discover Roman armour and trinkets uncovered with the Corbridge Hoard at the museum. The Hoard was one of the most significant finds in Roman history, providing us with a fascinating insight into the life of a soldier on the Wall. The museum is also home to the Corbridge Collection, the largest of the Hadrian's Walls collections.

Worth a visit

Kevin H, Zurich, Switzerland
But no need to spend all day there. Yes, the town is pretty and the old houses and river entice you in, but on a Sunday, there seemed to be little to do but to enjoy the beer!

Very well explained site with audio guide and some guided tours. Fascinating look at the Roman past of the area and the excavations carried out. Museum area has a large quantity of artefacts from the site very well explained

Fascinating Roman ruins

Gregory D, New Lambton
We walked across England along Hadrian's Wall 12 years ago, but this site was too far off the wall to get to easily, so we always intended to come back. Finally achieved it. And well worth the effort. Only 10% of the town excavated, but the roads, streets, granaries, military headquarters and public fountains give some idea of the extent and significance of the place. Several information boards and excellent free audio guides to bring it alive. And the new museum,,with comprehensive historical info and fascinating array of artefacts demands time to absorb. As Roman history tragics, we loved the place( but no kids in tow). A highlight of our 4th visit to England. Well done, English Heritage!!

Nice but missing the interactive element of other sites for kids

Bubblefish77,
We had planned to come here for awhile. The museum had an interesting array of articles and some information alongside them. Then as you go outside your straight on to the site. The granary is impressive, there's some signage around the site but a little more would be good. The setting and view is lovely. I did feel it would benefit a bit more if something interactive for the kids. There's audio handsets should you wish, as we were leaving a guided tour was about to start. We would have liked to do that but hadn't seen any information stating this was happening. The desk is also quite small and very quickly a queue formed that blocked the door way. We enjoyed it, our kids, under 7, were a bit fed up after a short time.
