Langley Castle is a fairy-tale boutique-sized castle hotel and the accommodation choice of many people’s dreams.
Located in its own wooded and lawned 12-acre estate near Hexham, it is just a stone’s throw from Hadrian’s Wall, mid-way between Carlisle and Newcastle and just an hour’s drive from the Northumberland coast and English Lake District.
Its team of friendly, local staff welcome wannabe ‘kings of the castle’, aspiring fair maidens and excited young princesses and knights of all ages and arrange amazing memory-filled occasions. These include fabulous ‘exclusive-use’ events, family celebrations and weddings, in which the group has the entire castle at their disposal.
The wedding team also adds unique touches to exquisite elopement weddings, in-between-sized glorious micro-weddings and renewal of vows celebrations. All civil ceremony weddings can be staged inside the castle, in a marquee, or in the charming woodland wedding grove.
Guests fall in love with the glorious fortified castle the second they get their first glimpse, perhaps having taken one of the best drives in the UK – the A686 up Hartside from Penrith.
Invariably, they then develop goosebumps the moment they push open the heavy castle door and step inside.
With an interior full of shining suits of armour, twinkling chandeliers, stained glass windows, historical wall hangings, ancient objects and paintings, Langley Castle is mesmeric.
This is a very real medieval castle, built in 1350 and brimming with authentic features. Medieval archways, seven-feet-thick walls complete with inset, raised window seats, the best example of medieval garderobes (early toilets) in Europe, dramatic staircases and real battlements conjure up a phenomenal guest experience.
Stay inside the castle, in one of the nine Feature or Deluxe rooms and you can sleep like a princess in a four-poster bed, or luxuriate in a spa bath. Alternatively, there are another 19 contemporary rooms within the grounds (Castle View and Castle Lodge), offering breathtakingly beautiful views of the medieval building. This is where canine pals can stay in designated dog-friendly rooms.
A daily Battlements Tour, exploring the castle’s rich medieval and Jacobite history, is an added delight, whilst visitors can also wander the grounds to explore woodlands and walks and meet the resident peacocks.
A sumptuous Northumbrian breakfast accompanies all stays, whilst guests can enjoy a glorious dining experience in the candle-lit Josephine’s, where fresh, local produce inspires all 2AA-Rosette dishes. Alternatively, they (and non-residents alike) can opt for a relaxed dining menu served in the Drawing Room – an atmospheric space featuring a roaring log fire in winter.
This is also where lovers of delightful afternoon teas flock for jam and cream indulgence all year round. Meanwhile, those arriving for Sunday lunch find it so much more than just a delicious roast, thanks to the unique ambience of Josephine’s, in which it is served.
Whether you visit for a special occasion, Christmas or New Year, a family staycation, a couple’s weekend away, or a must-do stop-off enroute to Scotland, Langley Castle will create lifelong memories and tick many things off your bucket list.
