Northumberland Miners' Picnic
Returns in 2027 | Woodhorn Museum, QEII Country Park, Ashington, NE63 9YF
The Northumberland Miners' Picnic returns to Woodhorn Museum in 2027, a family day out celebrating the county's coal mining heritage and the communities built around it.
The day traditionally begins with a memorial service honouring the men and women who worked in Northumberland's pits and those who lost their lives in the industry. Then the colliery brass bands take to the main stage, with performances from local bands, choirs and musicians through the afternoon.
There's plenty for families too, from craft workshops and a parade through the museum grounds to circus skills sessions. Talks, displays and local heritage groups bring the stories of Northumberland's mining past to life. Food and drink comes from the Winding House Café and independent food stalls.
Set on the site of the former Woodhorn Colliery, the museum is a fitting home for the picnic, with its preserved pit buildings, winding gear and the Northumberland Archives.
The picnic is usually held in June. The 2027 date and programme will be announced by Woodhorn Museum nearer the time, so keep an eye on Woodhorn's What's On page for updates.
