Close House have been chosen as the official venue of the British Masters in 2017, supported by Sky Sports. The event will be hosted by none other than Lee Westwood, Close House's attached tour professional and former World Number 1 golfer.
The British Masters has a rich history as one of the leading professional tournaments on the European Tour. The event was first held in 1946 and has a host of legendary previous winners.
British Masters champions in the 1980’s included legends such as Ian Woosnam, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Seve Ballesteros and Sir Nick Faldo who were the driving force behind Europe’s success in the major tournaments all claiming the US Masters.
The British masters returned to the Tour schedule in 2015 at Woburn thanks to the support of Sky Sports. The event was a huge success and was won by Sheffield’s Matthew Fitzpatrick who enjoyed his first European Tour victory. Sky introduced several new concepts during the event including a player wearing a live microphone during their round. Masterclasses were held after the round offering the fans unique insights into the games of leading players including Poulter, Westwood and Donald.
Lee originally opened the Colt Course on 10th May 2011 as the World’s No.1 Golfer.
The Ryder Cup legend is at the golf club on a regular basis either playing on the golf courses or using the PGA Academy to hone his game. He even played in this year’s members pairs knockout and the Club Championship.
Opened in 2011, the Lee Westwood Championship Colt course is set in almost 200 acres of beautiful Northumberland countryside. Designed by Scott Macpherson and named after English Golf Architect Harry Colt, the European Tour venue was voted one of the top 100 courses in the UK just one year after opening, and is the only course in North East to hold that accolade.
Lee Westwood has helped the team at Close House to improve the features of the Scott Macpherson designed Colt golf courses, adding new tees and bunkers. His experience of competing on the best courses around the world has allowed us to produce a golf course that will challenge all levels of golfer.
