Friendly Inn for explorers of Hadrian’s Wall.

karengail, Virginia
Comfortable Inn, nice room with en suite. Good food and friendly staff. GreT place to stay close to the wall, Roman Military Museum. Don’t count on warm, dry weather. The sign on the outside wall of the Twice Brewed Inn says “In memory of a sunny day in Hexham.”

Welcome respite

hlsentance, Langar, United Kingdom
We stayed for one night whilst walking Hadrian’s Wall. It’s a little way off the path (0.5mile), but not many options in the area. Reception was nice and welcoming. The room (Hadrian) was clean and set out with a double bed and bunkbed being the family room. The biscuits (possibly homemade) were a welcome treat in our room. The shower was nice and the bath was used by my daughter. Dinner downstairs was Sunday roast and portions were generous and well cooked. My husband enjoyed trying the beer from the neighboring brewery. As we were mid walk we retired to our room fairly early, the downside being that the noise from the bar floated up. However the bed was comfortable and once asleep we all slept well. Breakfast was a nice selection. I particularly enjoyed the eggs Benedict, whilst my daughter chose fruits (melon, strawberries, raspberries) and yogurt. We picked up our packed lunches which were expensive for what you got compared to other places, so we only ordered 2 instead of 3 and made do. A nice stay, the Romans patrons a nice addition!!

Ho hum food

passionflora,
To be fair, this place was okay. Besides, the options are limited in this part of the UK. The place was bustling with walkers and dogs. The bar was busy. The local beer was fine. The service, however, was uneven. Our first server told us that it was his first day. He didn't know anything about any of the dishes and couldn't recommend anything. No one else seemed to know anything about the food either. I had the Sunday roast chicken, which was too salty. My husband's food was okay. we came here the following night because we couldn't find anywhere else close to where we were staying. The food sated our hunger, but was unremarkable. It's too bad because this area is teeming with visitors and deserves a pub that offers good food.

Twice screwed

lel1978, Herne Bay, United Kingdom
We came here last year for food and were disappointed. I don’t like to be unfair, so we decided to visit again this year just in case our experience last time was a one off. It wasn’t a one off. My ravioli was clearly frozen and bits of it were hard. The goats cheese inside was almost solid and completely tasteless. I can’t cook but when I make this at home, it always tastes as bad as this did. It doesn’t come with the same price tag though obviously. My partner wanted a burger but was told the chef could only make what was on the menu. Obviously, the chef has issues with what’s on the menu too judging by the standard. He instead had a chicken and bacon burger. The chicken was tasteless (I tried some) and the chips it came with were powdery. I tried a bit of the salad and was lucky enough to get a mouthful of grit where it hadn’t been properly washed. Well, that’s always fun. 🤢 The location must be the only attraction to this place because the food is not good. The waiting staff weren’t very helpful or knowledgeable about the menu and appeared to be extras from Shaun of the Dead. A simple request of a burger shouldn’t be too taxing for any chef. Very underwhelming and expensive. At least the wine was good.
