Just gets better

We returned again to lovely lovely Matfen Hall for our 10th anniversary and there has been so many improvements and refurbishments, the hotel is looking fab! We stayed on the Love Lock package so were able to put a personalised padlock on the golf course bridge so there’s no getting rid of us now! Our room was immaculate and updated with an amazing bathroom suite and lots of lovely touches. We took an amazing treatment in the spa and we were treated so well. Dining in the Library restaurant was fabulous too, we had everything except lunch in there! The restaurant staff can’t do enough for you and were so welcoming. A real asset to the hotel! Thanks for making our stay so great!

Great for coeliac’s

Well done Matfen for being able to cater for coeliacs with ease. The staff were knowledgable about the menus and when questioned were willing to check with the chef. Breakfast was good too and they have even thought about cross contamination of the breakfast cereal with a separate packets if you want museli. If you are coeliac you can eat here with confidence. The staff are great too. Great stay.

An overnight stay and Spa experience with my daughter

The hotel and restaurant were as expected - lovely food and excellent service. The Spa was very disappointing. We checked in at 3pm as advised, to find the swimming pool packed with children and their water toys. The adult only relaxation room closed at 6.15pm earlier than the time quoted in the brochure (8.30pm)for the Spa closure. There are too few loungers round the pool but this was the only location available after 6.15pm. As a visitor I was unaware that the pool was part of the local “Leisure Centre “ and that at weekends numerous families are there using the pool. I should have been told that at the point of booking. I would not have. We came to relax and that was simply not possible. I would not recommend this to any adults wanting a peaceful relaxing escape.

Beware of the Meal Deal and offers...

We stayed at Matfen with friends on Wednesday night. The hotel is in a lovely setting, and has lots of character. It’s a good location for visiting Hadrian’s Wall, Wallingford, and Cragside. However, whilst the rooms are clean and comfortable they were cold when we arrived. The bathrooms could also do with a makeover. My wife used the spa and thought that was okay although the steam room was too hot no guests could enter. We had booked a dinner deal as part of the package. We were told if we paid £34.50pp we would get £40pp off the bill in the Library Restaurant. We checked this with waitress when we ordered. She confirmed that we would get £40 each. So we ordered starters and mains, with allowance to spare to cover the wine. She said that was fine. However, when we checked out the following day the receptionist said that we had to pay an additional £60 for the drinks, in the restaurant. Even through we had only spent £9 each on starters and £18 on mains. So £27 on food, against the £40 - so called allowance. The breakfast and ambiance was very good. 4 stars for that at least. This Hotel needs to stop trying to trick people up with these offers. If we had have just paid for what we order we would have saved a considerable amount. We will not return.

An afternoon tea to remember!

Just to say a massive thanks to all the staff especially Laura & Ben for making our afternoon tea so special. I took my class of 8 students (12-14 yrs) who have ASD and associated language & communication difficulties to experience an afternoon tea at Matfen and they loved every second. The students rose to the occasion and wore their best clothes. They got so much from the visit and learned all about etiquette and food presentation. This was an experience they will remember for a very long time. Thank you again Laura for being so accommodating to our needs and generous with your time. You have made a real difference to these students lives.
