I have noticed some very good reviews for Matfen Hall. Sadly my stay there was very disappointing. My wife and I were booked in for 2 nights. On arrival we checked in but were offered no assistance with our luggage. A small point I know, but still for a premium hotel this is poor. We booked an expensive room which had a lovely view over the golf course. However the room could have done with a bit of a makeover, and there was no bath only a shower. Which I have to say was very good.On a positive note the spa was good, the treatments my wife and I had were also very good. Now the food. Quite simply it was so bad I can’t really find the words to describe it. Sadly the service wasn’t much better. Let’s just say that our vegetables were served about 5 minutes after we had finished our meal. Despite asking where they were 3 times. My wife’s steak was like a small piece of shoe leather, and my shepherds pie contained no meat, only lukewarm mashed potatoes. We did complain to the manager of the conservatory restaurant, but it appeared to fall on deaf ears. With a couple of bottles of house wine, £108 was the bill, for a small bowl of mashed potatoes and a small piece of steak with cold chips, unbelievable. As Matfen Hall is quite secluded with no other restaurants in the near vicinity. We decided to cancel our second night. To be fair the next day when we checked out. The hotel manager did try to make amends and offered us a complimentary nights stay with dinner. However we refused the offer, which was a kind offer. Because it really was so dreadfully poor. I don’t like giving poor reviews and if you read my reviews you will note that this is the case. I do hope that maybe this was just a one off, and I wish Matfen Hall and the staff well. However they won’t be seeing my wife or I again. And we certainly wouldn’t recommend this hotel to family or friends or our business contacts for corporate functions.

Great time

We visited as part of a 26 male golfing party. Everything was perfect, from the booking process, (tedious at times trying to accommodate the ever changing demands of 26 guys), to food pre ordering, to accommodation, to quality of food presented, not to mention service. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. The prices in the Hunters Lodge were very reasonable, the service was impeccable. The golf course was in very good condition. All in all, very very good at a very reasonable price.

My boyfriend booked up for us for a getaway break at Matfen Hall only a couple of days before we arrived. Upon arrival into the grounds I almost immediately felt relaxed and was looking forward to our stay . The sun was shining and the setting was beautiful. We made our presence known to reception and to our surprise our room was ready ! We took our cases straight up to the room and were pretty taken aback by the size. Really small, far too hot with a sloping roof which made it feel cramped. We decided to just go for a walk round and have to say the grounds are beautiful and the Great Hall is a must to see. We ate in the Library Restaurant on the evening which was really tasty and the service was friendly and excellent and the morning after breakfast was also served in there. We used the spa upon our arrival too, but have to say it was more of a hotel pool with adjoining rooms.

Afternoon Tea

Just visited for Afternoon Tea and was impressed with the professionalism of the staff. They were extremely helpful and friendly which made our experience very pleasurable and we would certainly return for another visit. We were particularly impressed with Pavel - Team Leader and De Souza - Manager

Great place to stay

We spent 3 days in this fabulous setting. Spa, golf, restaurants and rooms were excellent. Lots to visit in the local area. Good service and very friendly staff (especially Arlene) Highly recommend for a weekend break or a longer stay.
