Getting to Holy Island

Royal Border Bridge Berwick

Royal Border Bridge, Berwick

The East Coast Main Line between Durham and Berwick was recently voted the most scenic rail route in Britain. So what better way to visit Holy Island than by train? Within two hours you can get from Durham to Holy Island enjoying breath-taking scenery along the way.

From the shadow of Durham Cathedral you can travel in style to Newcastle taking in striking views of the famous Tyne Bridges. As your train snakes further northwards, the unspoilt Northumberland coastline begins to draw you in and Holy Island comes into view. Crossing the magnificent Royal Border Bridge, over the River Tweed and into Berwick Railway Station, Holy Island is only a short-bus ride away.

Perrymans Logo

Look out for the Perrymans bus!

As the causeway to Holy Island is tidal, so there is a different bus timetable every day. To plan your journey, visit www.perrymansbuses.co.uk where connecting trains from Durham are shown along with the bus times.

By car: Holy Island is 70 miles north of Durham and 60 miles south of Edinburgh and then 5 miles off the A1, follow signs to Beal. Holy Island is linked to the mainland by a causeway which is covered by the sea twice a day. Safe crossing times are available on www.holyisland.northumberland.gov.uk or contact Berwick Tourist Info Centre for details. Don’t chance your luck – check before you drive. Better still, leave the car at Berwick and join the bus.
