Bēodern, meaning dining hall in Old English, is the bistro at the heart of a visit to
Ad Gefrin Anglo-Saxon Museum and Whisky Distillery,
Wooler, Northumberland. By day and night, it takes on the character of timeless hospitality and ancient welcome that is at the core of Ad Gefrin.
Bēodern continues to celebrate the Anglo-Saxon ethos of growing, harvesting, and preserving foods today through changing seasonal menus, with often familiar dishes and local favourites, presented in new and inspired ways for the sheer love of Northumbrian produce.
We have a range of seating options that are
accessible for everyone. Everything from a cosy chat in front of the fire, a quick salad lunch with colleagues, or a major celebratory feast for the whole family. There is additional outdoor seating on our patio overlooking
our garden, where dogs are also welcome.
Bēodern by Day
By day, enjoy a coffee and cake, a light lunch or a sharing platter, or maybe something heartier. Brunch is served every day (except Sundays) until 11:45 am, with our lunch menu taking over from then until 4 pm. Coffee and cake, including Cuddy’s Cave cheese scones, Olivier’s homemade shortbread, and malt loaf, are served every day until 4:30 pm.
Every Sunday, our roasts take centre stage, with a selection of meats on offer, served alongside vegetables and sides specifically chosen to complement the roast selected. Indulge from 11 am to 4 pm.
Bēodern by Night
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, whether it’s an intimate dinner for two or the chance to gather with friends or family, Bēodern provides a space to help you come together with a generosity of space, time and wonderful food and drink. Celebrating the best of Northumbrian produce, the land that gives it to us, and the people who invest their passion and time to bring it to our kitchen is at the heart of Bēodern. Generous hospitality is supplied in excess, with a signature welcome that has stood the test of time from ancient royal courts to Northumbria today.
Reservations are taken from 5 pm to 8 pm, with last orders for hot food at 8.15 pm.
Afternoon Tea
Available on the last Saturday of every month at 2 pm, come and enjoy Chef Olivier’s traditional Afternoon Tea, with his delicate touch and artistic flair. Our afternoon tea offers a delightful selection of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam, as well as a variety of homemade cakes and pastries. All served with a pot of your favourite tea, or why not treat yourself to a glass of bubbly or a splash of one of our spirits?
