We'll tell you what's nearby
Just a few miles off the Northumberland coast, the Farne Islands are one of Britain’s most remarkable marine nature reserves. Their rocky cliffs, seabird colonies and clear coastal waters create an unforgettable setting for a truly wild experience.
Swim & Snorkel the Farne Islands offers a rare opportunity to explore this extraordinary place from the water itself.
Your adventure begins at Seahouses Harbour, where your guides meet you and prepare you for the journey. From here, a short boat trip carries you across the North Sea towards the islands, often accompanied by seabirds and spectacular coastal views.
An underwater wildlife encounter
Once at our swim site, your guides will help you get comfortable in your kit and introduce the marine life you may encounter beneath the surface.
Equipped with wetsuits and snorkelling gear, you’ll slip into the sea to explore kelp forests, reefs and rocky gullies teeming with marine life. Snorkelling allows you to observe this underwater world in remarkable detail, from colourful invertebrates to shoals of fish weaving through swaying kelp.
The Farne Islands are also home to one of England’s largest Atlantic grey seal colonies. These curious marine mammals are often encountered in the water and sometimes approach swimmers to investigate before gliding effortlessly away.
Sharing the sea with seals in their natural habitat is an unforgettable wildlife experience and one of the most unique adventures in Northumberland.
Friends and family are welcome to join the trip as boat-based spectators if they prefer to stay dry.
Guided by local experts
Your swim is guided by the team at Northern Latitude, led by marine biologist and professional watersports instructor Simon Laing alongside experienced guides and a local skipper.
With small groups and expert supervision throughout, the experience focuses on enjoying the wildlife and landscape at a relaxed pace while learning more about the Farne Islands’ unique marine environment.
Northern Latitude are trained wildlife safe operators through the WiSe Scheme, promoting responsible wildlife encounters and ensuring marine life is approached with care and respect.
