Holy Trinity Church

Matfen parish church is a popular attraction for local visitors, who love its peaceful, prayerful atmosphere.

The Grade 2 listed church was built in 1842 by Sir Edward Blackett, who is buried here together with many of his descendants. The church has a particularly unusual outside staircase, and some beautiful 16th-century alabaster reliefs depicting scenes from the early childhood of Jesus. The church in Lorna Hill’s book 'The Vicarage Children' is thought to have been inspired by Matfen Church.
