The clue is in the name of the Coast and Castles Cycle Route, which scales Northumberland’s magnificent, castle-scattered coastline. The idyllic, 192 mile route stretches from Newcastle to Edinburgh, and 85 miles of it lie in Northumberland.

Idyllic by name and by nature

Weaving along our coastline, the Coast and Castles Route intertwines staggering sea views, fascinating glimpses of history, magnificent castles in various states of survival, countless coves and bays and coastal islands. South to north is probably more likely to be wind assisted.

This aptly named cycle route extends for 192 miles between Newcastle and Edinburgh, of which 85 miles follow or lie close to the magnificent Northumberland coastline, so richly blessed with fine scenery and heritage links.

Many miles of this flat and continually scenic coastal route as far as Berwick on Tweed offer constantly changing views of the sea and provide fascinating glimpses into a mingle of the coastline’s history and culture. Magnificent castles in various states of survival stand proudly and defiantly along its alignment.
