6th July, 3rd August, 7th September | 11:00 - 15:00 | Etal Village Hall
A new Sunday Makers' Market has been launched at beautiful Etal Village in Northumberland. Held on the first Sunday of each month, the event will bring together a variety of traditional, artisan makers - from glassmakers and ceramicists to bread and jam makers. Every month will be different with new makers joining and always lots of new work to see. Some months will also include free demonstrations throughout the day - everything from machine embroidery, Viking knitting, rag-rug making, kite making and painting. There is also an outdoor painting workshop (pre-bookable with the artist) linked to one of the Sundays. This year will see three trial Sundays go ahead on July 6, Aug 3 and Sept 7 with the aim of holding them on the first Sunday every month from May till October next year.
The events are being organised by The Tin Shed, which is based very close to Etal Village, and for the past 4 years has held Art at Etal event at the village hall on second Wednesday of each month. That very successful event will continue, running alongside the new Sunday makers' markets. It's hope the new events will be popular with the local community as well as visitors. The aim is to have a balance of artisan food makers and arts and crafts makers - supporting these small, independent local makers - many who are keeping traditional skills alive in modern, sustainable artisan businesses. Amongst the makers at the Sunday markets will be a new jam maker based in Lowick, a recently opened micro-bakery from Wooler, a kite maker from Belford, who designs, hand-builds and stitches them all himself and a nalbinder expert (Viking knitting) from north Northumberland. The Sunday Makers' Markets take place at Etal Village Hall, July 6, Aug 3, Sept 7, 11am till 3pm, free entry.
There will be lots more to do and see across Ford and Etal as part of your visit. There are two castles, three tearooms, Northumberland's only thatched pub, a working flour mill and museum, riverside railway ride between Heatherslaw and Etal, heavy horse farm and visitors' centre, Lady Waterford Hall museum, vintage and book shops, pottery and other artists' galleries and studios. There are also lots of walks and bronze age sites nearby. See Ford and Etal's own website for more info about the area.
