Denis Harry Fox is a military history and landscape artist who lives in Durham City. He was born in Seaham in 1944 and studied at Durham University and later at Newcastle University. Denis retired from teaching art at Emmanuel College, Gateshead in 2011 and since then he has been more involved with producing his own work for exhibitions. His present exhibition 'The Battle of Britain in North-East England' has taken three years to complete. Each painting tells the true story of what happened on 15th August 1940 where the RAF were called into action to defend the north from a major attack by the Luftwaffe. Preparation for this work involved studying RAF documents, logbooks, newspaper archives, reading literature connected with the Battle of Britain, visiting aircraft museums, meeting families of those airmen involved in this historical air battle including valuable eye- witness accounts taken from his grandfather and two of his uncles who at that time were on active service. It has been a very emotional journey for Denis especially when he met a number of visitors to his exhibitions last year in both Durham and Ripon Cathedral talking about his work and how it related to their own family experiences during the Second World War. The artwork will be on display in The King's Hall for the month of August and access to the exhibition is included in your admission ticket. Denis will be with us on the 15th August to talk to visitors about his work 'The Battle over the Farne Islands', Bill Millington DFC of RAF No. 79 Squadron attacking the Luftwaffe approaching the Farne Islands 15th August 1940
