Groundsmen at Alnwick Castle - part of the Northern Lights project, written by James Tierney
In a place of courageous landscapes
Caretakers of creation
sat and looked at things worth looking at
Now a garden
A memorial of flowers
to those who went before
Back to their roots
Tales beyond the telling
of people
shaped by the stains of history
they talked of things
worth talking about
Worse than expected
Now empty
as if war had emptied it of men
with the patience
of bird watchers
they fell silent
So small the grave
so large the graveyard
Small like brush strokes on a large canvas
Hanging in the home that is their castle
All the more memorable because of it
