Very Disappointing Stay

Kelly N, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
We were very dissatisfied with a few elements of our recent stay. You can tell that the castle had changed hands as the service is far from what it used to be! We won’t be returning and I am sad to say that as this was one of my favourite places before a recent visit proved hugely disappointing! The service was not great and if your celebrating anything other than an anniversary please do not expect anything special as you wont get it. We stayed for 1 night and we were very taken back by the service given. I was not catered for appropriately as a gluten free diner and at breakfast wasn’t offered any decent options and was left feeling like the poor relation! Not the standards and service I recall from our last visit. This was my special birthday treat and was left deflated

Interesting venue in beautiful grounds.

maggieianh, Watford, United Kingdom
Our room was large and very comfortable in the converted stable block overlooking the castle which is illuminated at night. Beautiful peacocks roam the grounds. The talk and tour of the castle after a delicious breakfast the next day in the castle's dining room was informative & interesting. We stayed there on our way to Scotland and would thoroughly recommend it to other travellers en route to Edinburgh and beyond!

Lovely venue, but food and service are subpar

marycontheroad, Brightwaters, New York
Langley Castle is a magnificent edifice, built in the 14th century. The grounds are small but quite pleasant and well maintained, with nice walks in the neighborhood. We stayed in the Radcliffe room for four nights. The furnishings are a little shabby- handles missing on the chest, tatty blanket, etc.-- but the room was comfortable, and the bathroom was outstanding, including a private sauna. There are two reasons we will never stay here again: the food and the service. You cannot book at the hotel without subscribing for half board. The breakfasts were acceptable: we appreciated the fresh orange juice and the eggs were mostly well cooked. Dinner, however, proved entirely unsatisfactory. Our first night the food came out barely lukewarm. We had finished our starters before we were served the glass of wine we had ordered. The food itself was completely unmemorable. The second dinner was even worse. We ordered steaks: mine, rare, and my husband's, medium. His was served virtually raw. They took the plates back and re-served them: mine had obviously just been sitting on a warmer. His steak came back very overcooked. And, they were tasteless- I didn't bother to eat mine. I really like a grilled tomato, but the chef uses a sauce tomato cut lengthwise and serves it barely cooked. (This was true at breakfast as well.) The menu was extremely limited, four mains and four starters, and it doesn't change, nor were there any specials at all during the four days we were there. The local pubs serve locally sourced pork and beef, as well as duck, but there was nothing on the Castle dinner menu but one lamb dish, one fish, a chicken breast, and gnocchi, and those tasteless steaks. The Taster Menu advertised on the website is not available. The food was so disappointing that we ate elsewhere (see my review of the excellent Havelock Inn in Haydon Bridge) two of the four nights, despite having paid for the dinners. Sandwiches on the drawing room menu are also very disappointing. The wine list is very poorly chosen, mostly mediocre bottles with one or two very overpriced better bottles. Though we stayed Mon-Fri no one on the staff, with the exception of the barmen, made any effort to connect with us. None of the managerial staff ever introduced themselves or asked us if we needed help planning our hikes. Thanks to Reese in the bar, we found a good route. Two out of the four mornings, I did not receive the newspaper I'd been invited to request. They supply good Penhaglion toiletries but only one very small bottle each of lotion, shampoo, and bath gel for two people. These were not replaced, and when we asked for more bath gel and lotion, we received shampoo instead. In short, the service, again with the exception of the barmen, is impersonal and incompetent. I understand the Castle changed hands recently. One can only hope that it will do so again. Meanwhile, don't go unless you can confirm that the there is a new chef and sommelier.

Everything you thought a castle would be

chris_fss, Bahia Blanca, Argentina
We stayed at Langley Castle Hotel in June for 4 nights in the Radcliff room. The room was marvelous, The four poster bed was very comfortable, the window alcove where we drank coffee in the afternoon was perfect, the bathroom with private sauna and half sunken bath was divine. The staff were very helpful. The grounds immaculate. The only thing that we did not like was lack of dress code for dinner. There were 2 options available, relaxed dining or dinner in the dining room. We were appalled by the lack of dress code, jeans seemed to be the acceptable norm but the prize for most inappropriate dress style was the woman who deemed it suitable to dine wearing a track suit!!! It appears that standards have gone down a long way since I grew up in England. I can remember that if you entered a restaurant without a tie you would be offered the house tie and if you decided not to accept you were denied entry. That being said I would recommend the Langley Castle Hotel but the experience for us would have been enhanced if there was a dress code for dinner.

Fathers day treat

Brian P, warrington
Booked to stay on Fathers day and had a room in the castle. The Percy room No 5. We had booked evening meal for 8 pm. We went to the bar and ordered drinks, my pint was off, i gave back to the barman and he changed the barrel and gave me another pint which was the same, found out it was cleaner in the pipes that was mixed in the drink, this could have made me ill id drank half a pint. At 7.45pm we arrived in the lounge where we was asked to be ready to be taken to our table foe tea, 8pm came and went, 8.15 then 8.30 still waiting, 8.40 i told the barman if table wasnt ready in 5 mins we would not be eating and have a refund. They quickly took us to our table. The food was very good no issues. In bedroom 5 there was a door that went to bedroom 6 (adjoining rooms) , during the night someone in room 6 tried to open this door into our room. When checking out , we were given a bill for the drinks that were bad, a 10% service charge for tea that was an hour late . I challenged this 10% charge and had it removed. The stature and history of this hotel deserves better , We drove for 3 hours for this treat then 3 hours home, It would have to be a good offer to get us back. We have stayed 4 times but unsure about number 5.
