superb break

Stayed for two nights on a Travel Zoo deal including 2 nights B&B plus evening meal taster menu. The hotel was very welcoming towards us and our dog. He had his own welcome pack with some food pouches, treats and clutch of "poo bags". The bar was well stocked with a choice of 4 real ales and a vast array of gins, wine was very good quality, if a little pricey at £23.50 for a sauvignon blanc.Breakfasts and evening meals were execptional, particularly the taster menu supper, great quality and variety. Staff were very attentive, polite abd professional in their demeanor. Would highly recommend and would love to return

We had the pleasure in staying here 2 nights. Very comfortable, attentive and courteous staff/owners. Restaurant had good choices for both breakfast, lunch and evening meals. Ideal for a base. Excellent and hope to return again.

Hotel good. Food very disappointing.

Karen W,
Stayed for one night after staying for a long weekend a few years ago. The hotel is nice and has recently been updated. No complaints there apart from the awful shower in Room 8. Our evening meal however was awful. We stayed for a few nights about 5 years ago and thought the food was great. Paid almost £7 for a starter of overcooked asparagus and a tasteless undercooked poached egg. Held out some hope for the main. I hsd salmon which seemed to have been pre-prepared like a ready meal and put in the oven. The lemon had been cooked with it and was really dry. The salmon itself was starting to burn on the edges and was cold in the middle. My other half had chicken and sauteed potatoes. The potatoes seemed to be frozen potato slices either oven baked or deep fried....that is no sauteed potatoes. When asked how our meal was by the waiter I told him this. He just seemed a bit shocked, didn't know what to say and scuttled off after asking if we wanted anything thanks very much. As we left we told the person on duty at reception. While more sympathetic than the waiter, no concession at all was offered. It's so dissapointing as we loved this hotel and the food when we visited before. It seems they are cutting corners with the separate meals and concentrating on the taster menus. I wouldn't have minded if these were on the menu as pub meals at a cheaper price but felt like they were trying to pass off standard pub grub as fine dining. Will definately not be returning.

Amazing stay

We have stayed at the Battlesteads a number of times on visiting the North East and every time we have had a fantastic time. The staff are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are cosy and comfortable - a great night’s sleep and the room is well stocked with ecologically friendly toiletries, coffee and tea and lovely fresh fruit. Meals in the restaurant are fantastic - a good choice of local foods on the menu and the taster menu is lovely! For me the best part though is the extensive breakfast - such a choice and so many local and homemade foods. We needed to stay for two nights to sample everything! The Battlesteads is still the best breakfast I have had and we can’t wait to visit again. Great value for money.

Great Long Weekend!

We stayed in one of the lodges and they are fabulous - extremely spacious, luxurious and contain everything you need. The staff were all really friendly and the food and drinks were excellent! We would definitely return if we’re in the area again!
