Overview

Home to northern Europe’s largest man-made lake, England's largest working forest and the darkest skies in England.

Kielder Water & Forest Park is perfect for individuals or families that love nature, water sports, exploring, walking, cycling and much more. It features mile upon mile of purpose-built trails including forest walks for all the family and dedicated mountain bike tracks.

The Lakeside Way is a 26 mile multi-user trail, suitable for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users, that encircles the shoreline of Kielder Water. A haven for wildlife, Kielder Water & Forest Park is also home to around 50% of England’s native red squirrel population. After 200 years of absence in Northumberland it is a delight to see ospreys thriving at Kielder. In 2017 we saw our 50th chick fledge, with all four breeding pairs producing chicks. Since 2009, when re-colonisation in Northumberland began, Kielder Forest has made an impressive contribution to the northern Osprey population. You can also spot otters, roe deer, badgers and bats. Waterskiing and sailing enthusiasts take to the water all year round and the lake offers a huge challenge to keen trout anglers between March and October.

You can discover all you need to know about Kielder Water & Forest Park including its history and wildlife at Tower Knowe Visitor Centre or visit Kielder Castle, the former hunting lodge for the Duke of Northumberland, which now hosts a visitor centre and cafe. Kielder Waterside boasts luxury self catering forest lodges, a gym, indoor heated swimming pool and sauna, restaurant and bar and the Kielder Water Birds of Prey Centre.

Famed for its dark skies thanks to minimal light pollution, Kielder Water & Forest Park within Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is a star gazer's heaven and home to the Kielder Observatory.

There is also contemporary art and architecture including the futuristic shelter design of the Belvedere, the Minotaur maze and Silvas Capitalis, also known as the ‘giant forest head’. Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to spending a day trip, weekend break or holiday in what the Campaign to Protect Rural England calls the most tranquil spot in the country.

The park is also home to the award winning Kielder Winter Wonderland every November and December and the Kielder Marathon every October.

Would have been better with nice weather ha

fishnorwich, Norwich
Had lodge with outside hot tub inside was good but think outside of lodge needs painting and good clean up. Towels bathrobes etc all there. There’s swimming pool and gym. Birds of prey on site which was good. Osprey viewing nice as well. Go to hive to see birds and red squirrels. Make sure you take your food for self catering it’s in a remote place, Went to Sea Houses and placers around there nice day out. Wrong time of year for the dark skies and weather not good when we were there would have liked to gone to the observatory but didn’t get really dark in June. Enjoyed visit for 3 nights. No phone signal in lodge have to be lucky when walking around as well.

Scenery and tranquility

JamieC955, Bedlington, United Kingdom
When staying in Bellingham we came to Kielder for an afternoon and do one of the many walking treks. We opted for the Viaduct walk having already been to Hareshaw Linn in the morning. We hardly saw a soul in the trek and the peace and tranquility, as well as some stunning scenery made this a very pleasant experience. We will definitely return and either do one of the bike trails or another longer walk.

Excellent day cycling

Whybs27, Okotoks, Canada
Planned a day cycling and heard we could cycle round Kielder water for 26m. Its not flat though, lots of inclines and your endurance will be tested. Interesting art work to see along the way but don’t take your bike to Wave Chamber- not bike friendly Great views, lovely day and according to my app we burned 3002 calories. We were advised to take the north shore first and go clockwise round the water- which is good advice

Excellent walking and spectacular views

Scottfamily456, Goole, United Kingdom
spent a couple of days early May doing some of the lakeside walks. Excellent information from the Tower Knowe visitor centre and hot sausage rolls. Lots of different walks to choose from and all very enjoyable even when it was persisting down with rain.

Fresh air, peace and quiet and great adventures. Flipping love this place!! We did the ZOG trail with a toddler and a dog and it was lovely. Didn’t have the best weather but the tree canopy covers you
