WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Best accommodation along the wall

BobbyOllox, Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom
This B&B was selected for us by contours as part of a hadrians wall walking tour. It is a little way off the wall, but John was more than willing to collect from ( and return us to) the wall in line with our plans, and so this aspect was not a problem. We were able to walk back from Vindolanda one day in about 30 minutes so is ideally placed for that , in a quiet peaceful hamlet. Sometimes a B&B is more about the host than the accommodation- in the case of Henshaw Barn, both aspects were top notch. Pauline and John were the perfect hosts - friendly , attentive, professional and (justifiably)proud of the experience their guests received. Fresh scones and tea upon arrival were only the start of culinary treats - we had dinner one evening, light supper the next, and breakfast both days. John’s training and years of experience as a chef shone through every mouthful - generous quantities, high quality ingredients, home made , and perfectly presented. Our two rooms ( a separate one for our son) were exquisite and very very comfortable- each had a bathroom, and we had dedicated use of a sitting room too - could not have wished for better. A little bowl of sweets in our son’s room is an indication of the attention to detail that Pauline takes over her guests. ( she asked us to let them know that we had safely made it to our next destination). Just lovely and extremely genuine.

A perfect place to stay

After a day walking through the rain it was an absolute delight to arrive at Henshaw Barn hosted by Pauline and John. The accommodation is perfect, completely at one with the environment and with lots of luxurious touches. If the place itself is not wonderful enough you will be blown away by Johns cooking. In a previous life he was a chef and you will enjoy high end restaurant quality food. On top of all this John dried my soaking boots! You will not be disappointed.

Exquisite lodgings and food

Dale A,
Pauline and John are the ultimate British hosts - gracious, interested and ever-so-accommodating. Our room was warm and comfortable, our en-suite bathroom perfectly appointed and sparkling clean. But the food was beyond anything we could have expected or imagined. John is a master chef, and every meal was beautiful and absolutely delicious. We both closed our eyes in bliss when we tasted the sticky toffee pudding!

The property is beautiful with stunning garden. Our room, overlooking the garden, had a very comfortable bed, good shower room, and all the little extras to make our stay very special. The breakfast menu was extensive and the evening meal, an optional extra, was excellent. All the food was cooked to order by John, a professional chef, and served by Pauline. Everything was first class. Thank you to Pauline and John for making our stay so memorable. We had a wonderful time at your property.

A welcoming stay with great food

Katherine M,
We were fortunate to stay for 2 nights on our recent Hadrian's Wall walk. Pauline and John were extremely welcoming and very knowledgable about the area. Henshaw Barn provides an excellent standard of accomodation with thoughtful attention to detail. We enjoyed delicious meals prepared by John and we hope to visit again in the future.
