Overview

WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Northumberland is stunning - find out more on our website - and come and visit!

** Still one of the best B&Bs ever! **

82-Ag, Houston, Texas
After my first visit here in May 2016, I returned with my wife for a two night stay. John and Pauline are incredibly thoughtful and accommodating hosts! The room was superb, very clean, and the bathroom is quite large (my wife was happy about that!) We had two dinners at Henshaw Barn as well. John is an excellent chef, and both meals were the best we had on our 6 day visit to the UK. Breakfast was very good as well. When your hosts sit and chat with you for long periods of time, you really feel more like friends and family than just innkeeper and guests. Pauline and John are now part of our extended family! As there is so much to see and do in this area of Northern England, we likely will be back...and we will stay at Henshaw Barn for certain!

Such an enjoyable stay

ValePsE,
Pauline and John have created a home from home at Henshaw Barn for their guests. Bedrooms are comfortable, and have the benefit of sharing a cosy sitting room. As other reviewers have observed, the breakfasts are superb. I can’t remember a tastier breakfast, cooked to perfection. If you like black pudding, this is heaven. John’s is home made and delicious. Supper is not to be be missed. John’s culinary skills, perfected over the years in up-market restaurants, ensure you’ll have a treat. He and Pauline, who has created a charming home, have a real eye for detail and their friendly, warm welcome is much appreciated ( even by the blackbirds nesting outside the dining room!). Henshaw Barn’s location is perfect for visiting what maybe the best stretch of Hadrian’s Wall.

An overwhelmingly wonderful stay.

This is the most wonderful bed and breakfast establishment we have ever stayed in. We stayed here whilst cycling the Hadrian's Wall Cycle Path. John and Pauline were very welcoming with tea and scones after our full day of cycling; the bedroom and bathroom were both delightful, as was the sitting-room for guest use. The attention to detail was exceptional in every respect. We sampled John's mouth-watering evening meal and the breakfast was equally as delicious. We will return one day and have already highly recommended to friends. I had mentioned that our stay was also our wedding anniversary, and at breakfast time we were presented with a lovely card and sweets. A very touching gesture. Our only complaint was ............ we weren't there long enough to enjoy the surroundings of John and Pauline's lovely home!!!!

Luxury in Northumberland.

We stayed again at Henshaw Barn for a few days break. If only we could have stayed for longer. The warm welcome and luxurious comfort that we always associate with the Barn was very much in evidence from the moment of our arrival, greeted with a pot of tea and warm scones. Pauline and John make their guests feel so welcome, from the fluffy towels, beautifully soft cotton bed linen to the truly amazing breakfasts cooked by John. We first stayed at The Barn because of its proximity to Hadrian’s Wall but we now stay because we have such a wonderful time there. Pauline has a way with her interior comforts that I personally always get inspiration from, and John’s excellent menus ensure that my husband is always prepared to have a go at cooking when we get home. They are both so very generous with their knowledge, ideas, recipes and time. It was a real treat to see their garden just beginning to blossom in the Spring, usually we are seeing the garden entering its Autumn tones. It was a delight to see the garden in all its fresh Spring colours. As usual, we were indebted to our hosts for their knowledge of the local area which enable us to visit shops that we might not have noticed without prior knowledge. We make sure that we book our next stay at Henshaw Barn before we leave, it gives us something to look forward to, and we are always to happy to return. Thank you John and Pauline, as always our stay was excellent and we very much look forward to seeing you both later in the year.

Weekend Re-Treat!

Kimberley M,
Returned to this charming B&B with my husband over the Easter Weekend. A warm welcome as always from our friendly hosts John and Pauline. Our room was lovely with a huge bed and En-suite bathroom. Food wise this is so much more than a B&B! Breakfasts are amazing and we also opted to have an evening meal on the Friday. We couldn’t fault the food. Restaurant level choices cooked by pro chef John; simply delicious. John and Pauline even kindly dropped us off at a local pub so that we could enjoy a drink on Sunday afternoon and picked us up too.
