WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Northumberland is stunning - find out more on our website - and come and visit!

A Hidden Gem

John & Pauline obviously work so hard at making this little B&B an outstanding place to stay. You begin with the welcoming Tea & scones. Exceptional Rooms, beautifully decorated. Very warm and cosy. Then the food is out of this world. We ordered our meals online before arrival but were so shattered by the walking that we were upset that we could not do it justice. The breakfast were all cooked fresh and there was a choice of everything, catering for all diets. the little Croissant were amazing. John & Pauline are very attentive to make sure you have everything you need.Even supplying the local Twiced Brewed Beer..

Best spot to stay at Hadrian's Wall

Best B&B I ever had ! Unforgettable ! One of the hardest day of the Hadrian's wall walk was rewarded when we arrived at the Henshaw Barn with Pauline and John. Hint: for a little donation they'll pick you up at Hadrian's and i would recommend this service :) We walked all the long way and this extra 30-40 minutes walk was unneccesary and boring :) (see the street picture) We arrived wet and cold....and have been directly offered a hot tea and biscuits...they brought the wet clothes and shoes into a heated room and we had time to relax and a little conversation with both. This was SO nice. Thanks for this extra service ! The room is beautiful(picture is taken when we checked out, so the beds were used), bathroom, shower and toilet perfect, and everywhere you find little helper/gimmicks/stuff you need..this was really mindful ! I booked the dinner (thanks god!) and we had a lovely and delicious meal cooked by the Chef John. Later we sat all together and a wonderful evening until 1am :) Both are so warm and welcoming....this is definitely the best spot to stay when you do Hadrian ! Sending big hugs to the UK from GER

If you are walking Hadrian's Wall or seeking a base from which to explore the delights of Northumberland this should be your first and only choice for accommodation. We have stayed here several times now and Pauline and John never fail to exceed our expectations. In fact, we are running out of superlatives to describe the experience. Warm, homemade scones and a welcoming cup of tea after a long journey set the scene for a thoroughly relaxing stay. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the whole ambience at Henshaw has been created to allow you to totally unwind. John's breakfasts are legendary even to the point that you are almost guaranteed to get a double yolked egg! And the evening meals.......well, they would not be out of place in a Michelin starred restaurant. John and Pauline's local knowledge will greatly enhance your visit as they can recommend where to go and what to see. If you are planning a visit to Northumberland then Henshaw Barn should be your first choice for somewhere to stay.

Perfect down to the last detail

Maxine F,
We only stayed one night but were welcomed immediately. Pauline is a great hostess and John is a fantastic chef. We had a lovely cosy dinner with delicious home cooked food. Breakfast excellent. Great attention to detail everywhere.

What a gem ! We had an unforgettable time at Henshaw Barn - ideal location, first class hospitality, fine dining, and great company. Pauline and John gave us a door into the gem which is Northumberland, their attention to detail, enthusiasm and commitment to providing a complete memorable package made our stay at Henshaw Barn perfect. We could ask for nothing more, we will certainly be returning to recharge our batteries and experiences. Thank you both.
