WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Very comfortable b&b with excellent food

Helen S, London, United Kingdom
We had a great stay with Pauline and John, who were very welcoming. We had a lovely room with a large comfortable bed, a well stocked ensuite bathroom and lots of hot drinks and biscuits in the room. Everything was spotlessly clean. The best bit was the breakfasts and evening meals - John was a professional chef for many years and produced fantastic meals on the 2 nights we stayed.

As good as ever!

This has been our seventh visit to Henshaw Barn. Why do we keep returning? Simple - Henshaw Barn is a delightful, luxury B&B situated in a beautiful part of the country, with lots to do in the local area. Pauline and John are simply wonderful hosts and make everyone welcome and in fact, they have many visitors who, like us, return time and time again. The rooms are comfortable and equipped with EVERYTHING that you could need. There is an extensive breakfast menu, all carefully prepared and beautifully presented, using home grown and locally sourced ingredients. Imaginative, delicious evening meals are also available when prebooked and are certainly worth 'staying in' for. Pauline and John also have a great knowledge of the area and are happy to suggest outings based on guest's interests. In conclusion, our latest visit has been every bit as good as our first. This B&B can't be more highly recommended.

Lovely location, lovely building, lovely food but most of all: lovely people.

Kathleen M,
We stayed at Henshaw Barn for two nights as part of a Hadrian's Wall Walk arranged by Contours. All of the accommodations that Contours arranged were good, but Henshaw Barn was special. Our stay started the day before we arrived when my husband phoned to change our pick up point, which was "no problem". They welcomed our wet, wind-blown selves with hot tea, scones and home made jam in the kitchen. John, a "retired" executive chef, prepared two of the best dinners we had on our trip...and he fixed my husband's boots! Our room was charming; the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was big, with a deep tub and a skylight. Pauline told me that they didn't set out to have a bed and breakfast: Henshaw Barn is their home...and they made it feel like it was ours as well.

Tick, tick, tick ...

I can think of little original to describe our stay at Henshaw Barn - it's all been said so eloquently in previous reviews. So all can add is that it 'ticks all the boxes', and with some Very Big Ticks. Location; accommodation; hospitality and meals - all first-class. Thank you John and Pauline for making ours a truly enjoyable stay. If we return to the area in the future (as we hope to!), Henshaw Barn would doubtlessly be our first choice for accommodation.

A Gem!

Nick S,
This has to be the 'Gold Standard' for small B+Bs! After a long day on The Wall we were picked up and taken to the best B+B we have stayed in, ever! Greeted with a welcome cup of tea and warm scones just baked we realised that we had arrived at the delightful home of John and Pauline who have spared no detail in preparing their converted barn for their guests. John, a retired professional chef, prepares wonderful meals, largely with home grown vegetables and herbs and including a wide range of edible flowers! Pauline has gone to great lengths to ensure their guest have everything they could possibly need. We loved our stay here. Our only regret was that our schedule only included one night!
