Overview

WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Northumberland is stunning - find out more on our website - and come and visit!

Fabulous in every respect

Misti66, Isle of Man, United Kingdom
I stayed at Henshaw Barn in November 2018 for 5 nights whilst I visited my daughter who lives nearby. Pauline and John were the perfect hosts and from the moment I arrived I felt at home. The accommodation is absolutely excellent; beautiful, comfortable, spotlessly clean and with great thought given to the furnishings and amenities. I really had absolutely everything I needed. John is an amazing professional chef and the breakfasts provided are just fantastic.. the best Eggs Benedict I have ever eaten! I was sorry that I didn’t have the time to sample the evening menu as it looked fabulous. John and Pauline made me feel so welcome and took time to chat with me each evening when I returned. I really felt as if I was staying with friends. I would thoroughly recommend Henshaw Barn, and am already planning a return visit. Thank you Pauline and John, you are fabulous! See you soon :)

Wonderful B&B

ThereseB572, Sydney, Australia
We stayed at Henshaw Barn during a break from Hadrian's Wall and arrived exhausted to be given strong tea and home-made scones. Just what we needed! That set the tone of the whole stay, with comfortable accommodation, superb food and a lovely welcoming ambience. We will definitely return.

Delightful B&B

Ron S, Appleby-in-Westmorland, United Kingdom
I stayed earlier this year with Pauline and John and promised them a review but all I am going to say is my whole experience was excellent: from their initial welcome, the cleanliness of my room, the quality of the decor and fittings, and the tasty breakfast with its ample choice (do try John’s Black Pudding). Hexham is the nearest town and has several nice eateries BUT if you want an excellent evening meal you do not have to go to town. Trust me when I say John is an excellent chef, chose from their menu and you will not be disappointed. An excellent B&B, and I have stayed in many, I am only sorry Pauline and John that it took me so long to write this review. You deserve it.

Unique country ambiance!

Michael L,
My daughter and I took a break from hiking Hadrian's Wall at Henshaw B&B, and the extra day was like heaven! Pauline and John were extraordinary hosts, making us feel very much at home, with great conversation and outstanding meals, the atmosphere very inviting and comfortable. Our stay at Henshaw Barn B&B was one of the highlights of our 3 weeks in the UK!

Sleep soundly at Henshaw Barn!

MD S, Alexandria, Virginia
I stayed at Henshaw Barn while at Vindolanda at Hadrian's Wall for a class on Roman pottery. What a singular delight! Pauline and John were so gracious and welcoming, and John is a super cook! If you leave there hungry, it is your own fault! Pauline has decorated the B&B as her own home - warm, personal, charming. Good food, lovely accommodations and good conversation - what more could one want? Don't dawdle! Get you to Vindolanda and stay at Henshaw Barn B&B - you'll be SO glad you did!
