The heart of Northumberland

As well as the North Tyne Valley having incredible views, you can also indulge yourself in some homemade baking in the historic market town of Bellingham; a popular stopping point on the Pennine Cycle Way and the Reivers Cycle Route.

Perhaps you prefer the solitude of Stonehaugh and its new Sky Pavilion. Renowned for dark, starry skies and tranquillity, it’s the perfect spot for some stargazing.

Nature and history lovers will both find Greenhaugh intriguing. Here you can visit fortified farmhouses known as Bastles, which were built in the 16th and 17th centuries to protect people against raiders from both England and Scotland, or pop into The Holly Bush Inn for some refreshment.

And in the pretty village of Falstone, walkers and cyclists can refuel and relax. This pretty village nestles below the dam of Kielder Water on a loop of the River North Tyne. It is a great base from which to take in Northumberland National Park and the Scottish borders beyond.

Falstone

Surrounded by stunning woodlands, local and traditional village activities, and home to a 1.5 acre play park, Falstone is fun for all ages.

Bellingham

Bellingham is a historic market town and with its village charm, riverside setting and spectacular countryside, it will be a retreat to remember. B&Bs, traditional pubs and stone cottages can be found in the village, with waterfalls, trails and cycling routes just waiting to be explored.

The Pennine Cycleway

The 355 mile Pennine Cycleway is split into three maps, and Northumberland’s section weaves its way through the North Pennines. Ending at our coastal town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, it traverses some of England’s most dramatic unspoilt landscapes.

The Reivers Cycle Routes

Northumberland’s Reivers Cycle Routes take the form of two intertwining trails. One is an on-road challenge and the other is an off-road adventure, and iconic landmarks are scattered along its entirety.

Dark skies

It's safe to say that Northumberland is the best place to stargaze in the UK. 572 square miles of the county have been awarded Gold Tier status for their pristine dark skies, and our International Dark Sky Park is the largest in the UK. So get ready for a star-studded show.
