Berwick coast & country region

Perched right on the northern edge of Northumberland, Berwick-upon-Tweed is a town with a rich and turbulent history.

Its border location meant it changed hands many times, often violently, and its town walls are testament to its past as a valued asset fought over by the English and the Scottish.

From the top of those walls you can see the wide estuary of the River Tweed and a Robert Stevenson-designed railway viaduct hailed as one of the finest in the world.

It is one of the views that has enchanted many, including Lancashire painter L.S. Lowry who painted and holidayed in the town. Today a thriving community of artists is still drawn to Berwick, attracted by its light and character.

However, Berwick is about more than its vistas. It is a bustling and vibrant market town that offers everything a visitor could need.

If you like your military history, there's the fantastic Border Barracks and Museum and if you appreciate great culture try the Maltings Theatre and Arts Centre which often hosts some brilliant touring productions.

Go further down the coast and discover the Holy Island of Lindisfarne - where early Christianity was nurtured over a thousand years ago - and there is Bamburgh Castle which towers majestically looking out over the North Sea and was recently named as one of Britain's favourite views.

The border countryside's turbulent past can be seen all over the landscape, but look out for Chillingham Castle, Norham Castle and Etal Castle.

There's also Flodden Field, a 15th Century battle site where, according to local legend, the ghostly echo of clashing sword and battle cry can still be heard to this day.
