Rhythm Disrupts the Archive

This film screening, programmed by BFMAF with filmmaker and writer Val Phoenix, explores feminist DIY punk in the late 20th century. The films in this programme share experiences and visions of women who created alternative spaces, scenes, zines and took to the stage to challenge conventions of beauty and gender within the punk scene, as well as issuing a challenge to the wider world. Food will be provided, on a first come first serve basis, by Deva’s Sri Lankan Delights at 5pm.

Born in Flames – Lizzie Borden (1983)
New York ten years after the most peaceful revolution that the world has ever seen. The governing Socialist party is emphasising the need for unity on the slow road to reform. However, discontent is surfacing, particularly from the women’s groups. Vigilante groups are formed to combat the rise in street violence and rape.

Bikini Kill in the UK – Lucy Thane (1993)
In 1993, Bikini Kill toured the UK with grrrl associates Huggy Bear. Lucy Thane made a documentary about the trip, also featuring appearances from the Raincoats, Sister George and Skinned Teen.

Totally Girl Powered – Val Pheonix (2013)
A brief encounter with Bikini Kill in 1993 comes to life 20 years later as a writer uncovers layers of memories in the darkroom.
