Discover the powerful and atmospheric work of Joan Eardley in this major exhibition at the The Maltings: Granary Gallery.
Joan Eardley: The Sea at Catterline brings together a remarkable collection of paintings and works on paper inspired by the dramatic coastline of Catterline, a small fishing village on Scotland’s north-east coast that became central to Eardley’s life and artistic practice.
Widely regarded as one of the most distinctive British artists of the twentieth century, Eardley is celebrated for her expressive, emotionally charged paintings. While many know her for her portraits of Glasgow street children, this exhibition focuses on the extraordinary seascapes she created during the final years of her life - works filled with movement, texture and the raw energy of the natural world.
Captivated by the ever-changing North Sea, Eardley painted outdoors in challenging conditions, often battling wind and rain to capture the force of the waves and the atmosphere of the coastline. Experimenting with materials including sand, grasses and layered paint, she created artworks that feel alive with motion and emotion.
Featuring important loans from the Royal Scottish Academy, The Fleming Collection, Aberdeen Art Gallery and private collections, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience some of Eardley’s most celebrated late works up close. The exhibition has been developed in partnership with The Fleming Collection as part of RSA 200: Celebrating Together, a nationwide programme marking 200 years of the Royal Scottish Academy.
Whether you are discovering Joan Eardley for the first time or revisiting one of Scotland’s most admired artists, this exhibition offers an unforgettable journey through landscape, weather and the emotional power of art.
