Working with Film Archives

Many artists – from writers, to musicians and filmmakers – find inspiration in archives. This discussion, marking the launch of Cinenova’s new website, is an opportunity to hear about using archives as a creative tool. We’ll then share some food together before our evening film screening, Rhythm Disrupts the Archive, which includes two Cinenova films. Food will be provided by Dewa’s Sri Lankan Delights at 5pm. 

Join us for a discussion marking the launch of Cinenova’s new website, which opens up new ways to access and explore the feminist film distributor’s paper archive and collection of 300+ film and video works.

Many artists – from writers to musicians and filmmakers – find inspiration in archives. This is an opportunity to hear about using archives as a creative tool. Materials gathered and the records kept through artistic practice and research can feel both personal and significant, raising questions about how and if they should be preserved, shared and made accessible to wider audiences.

A creative approach to engaging with an archive can also bring opportunities to address what it lacks: who and what isn’t there. Cinenova will discuss their unique position as an archive and distributor of works by artists, collectives and communities who documented important social histories through film and video. Ensuring access to the collection gives practitioners today the opportunity for dialogue with feminist films of the past.
