The Gymnasium Gallery
The Gymnasium Gallery is part of The Maltings’ visual arts programme and will reopen in 2027 following refurbishment, marking an important new chapter for arts and culture in Berwick.
The gallery is a former military gymnasium connected to Berwick Barracks. The Barracks were built to a design by architect Nicholas Hawksmoor and when completed in 1721 it was the first purpose built military barracks in Britain.
Between 1881 and 1964 the barracks were home to the British regiment, The Kings Own Scottish Borderers, with the Gymnasium added to the site in 1901 as a venue for physical training for the regiment.
When complete, the gallery will provide an expanded space for exhibitions, artist commissions and creative activity, building on The Maltings’ commitment to bringing ambitious visual art to the town and creating opportunities for artists and audiences to connect. Together with the wider exhibition programme, the Gymnasium will help strengthen Berwick’s reputation as a place where art, creativity and community come together.
