Sycamore Gap, Hadrian's wallHadrian's Wall is one of Northumberland's true icons and England's largest World Heritage Site, standing dramatically on the lofty crags of the dramatic countryside to which it lends its name. Built by Roman Emperor Hadrian almost 2,000 years ago, to 'separate the Romans from the Barbarians,' standing by the wall today is to look upon a landscape little changed since Roman eyes scoured the horizon for signs of northern invaders.

Housesteads, Hadrian's WallHadrian's Wall Path and Hadrian's Cycleway provide rewarding long distance walking and cycling challenges, running the length of the wall as it snakes from Bowness-in-Solway to the aptly named Wallsend, spanning Northern England. Hadrian's Wall Country is as famous a walking and cycling paradise for its array of circular walks and traffic-free lanes, providing opportunities to explore the best preserved sections and take in breathtaking views from neighbouring crags.

Vindolanda, Hadrian's WallHadrian's Wall itself is dotted with forts, milecastles, temples and archaeological sites. Fascinating reconstructions at museums and visitor attractions along the length of the wall bring its history to life. Chesters is home to the best preserved Roman Cavalry fort in Britain whilst Housesteads and the multi-award winning Vindolanda are the site of the extensive remains of forts and civilian settlements and contain unique artefacts including the Vindolanda Tablets - ancient postcards written by Roman soldiers dating from the first century.

Historic, picturesque towns and villages such as Hexham, Corbridge and Haltwhistle are scattered throughout the countryside surrounding the wall, home to interesting high streets, traditional pubs and art galleries, making great places to stay.
