Mountain biking in Northumberland

Our rugged landscape and challenging terrain means Northumberland is a mountain-biker's paradise.

The county has a growing reputation in mountain biking circles. Kielder Water & Forest Park boasts some of the best single-track trails in the UK with breathtaking views.

The trails make for a bare knuckle ride – choose to head down the 1,900 ft summit of Deadwater Fell on an extremely challenging black graded trail. This is not a trail for the amateur; it is full of technical climbs and rock drop-offs.

Or try one of three red graded routes: the stunning new Lonesome Pine trail with its ‘North American’ feel and the longest ‘North Shore’ broadwalk in the UK, the red Deadwater trail with 360° view from coast to coast (on a clear day) or the 33km Bloody Bush trail offering links to the famous 7 Stanes bike centre in the Scottish Borders.

Casual and family riders can try their hand at a more moderate blue graded route for equally breathtaking views.

Kielder Water & Forest Park also boasts the Castlewood Skills Loop, which features decking and bridges to test your skills on before deciding which trail is for you, and a Trails Park for practicing skills or learning new tricks.

If you want to get away from set trails and head into open country, try the famous Coast and Castles or Hadrian’s Wall cycle routes that offer rugged terrain and fantastic views.

The Reivers Mountain Bike Club is one of Northumberland's oldest clubs and organises regular rides throughout the year.
