The Official Visitor Site for Northumberland
Woodhorn is South East Northumberland's world class visitor attraction, fresh from a massive £16 million redevelopment. It rolls a dynamic museum, galleries and study centre into a dramatic new building situated in the picturesque Queen Elizabeth II Country Park.
This is the place to come to discover Northumberland's past. Arrive at Woodhorn's astounding 'Cutter Building' in 2007 and step back to 'Coal Town' in 1918 - a breathtaking
exhibition about Northumberland's mining and cultural heritage where you'll larn the patter (the local lingo) and sharpen your pick for 'The Colliery Experience' - one of our great wet weather attractions. Discover what life was like for generations of mining families through the eyes of the Ashington Community, with simulations to give your senses an outing they'll 'nivver' forget.
The colourful mining banners on the 'ramp of reform' provide a vivid reminder of times of sorrow and celebration, whilst 'Fabulous Northumberland' celebrates today's Northumberland through the eyes of award-winning photographer, Paul Plews. Alternatively, fill in gaps on your family tree in Woodhorn's archives centre with photos, memorabilia and 700 years of maps and family records.
Step outside and explore Queen Elizabeth II Country Park, a wildlife haven with miles of nature trails and cycling paths. The sparkling 40-acre lake provides great fishing, windsurfing and canoeing in beautiful surroundings.
