Sunday Lunch

Malcolm C,
A pleasant drive from our coastal departure point to Matfen Hall for lunch. A victorian hall, but which dates back to the 1660's. Sadly nothing of that era survives, but an impressive building, overlooking the golf course. We were shown to a pleasant room, very high ceilinged, suitably decorated and furnished to match the period. A pleasant waiter took our pre lunch drinks order and left the menu for us to make our choices, and browse the Sunday papers. We didn't have to wait very long until we were shown to our table in the library dining room. Again, a very pleasant room, looking out over the golf course, which seemed to be busy. Our 3 courses were nicely presented by very courteous staff. There was no service charge added, but a £1 was added for the benefit of the local hospice. We enjoyed our experience very much, and would certainly return on another occasion.

Beautiful hotel and surroundings

Sarah-elsa21212, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
This hotel is beautiful with lovely surroundings. Staff are all very friendly. We stayed in the double deluxe room which was very nice. Comfortable bed, lovely bathroom. The evening meal was lovely and the waiters were very professional. Breakfast was very good and lots to choose from. Spa was very nice and clean with a good size pool. Would definitely stay again.

Very tranquil location

We booked for one night on our way to Scotland. This is a very tranquil location, a very good hotel oozing quality with attentive staff. We enjoyed a very good breakfast. Our only disappointment was the unavailability of wifi in our room. I reported this twice however it had not been restored by the time we left. As you can't get a mobile phone reception either we felt a bit cut off from civilisation, luckily it was only for 24 hours! We will stay again.

Dog friendly I think not

Amanda G,
We stayed here from the 10th to the 16th of sept. Now I travel with dogs all the time and know the right questions to ask, I thought I had in this case as well, however when we got there it was very restricted where we could go with the dogs . Fully understand that Eating areas are out of bounds however only have the bar with a hard floor and the lobby area which was totally unsuitable. After discussion with the operations manager a room was made available but it was at the other side of the hotel and was very isolating. We had after all paid extra to have the dogs stay !!!!!The room we stayed in was no 17 and was very drab and tired, the bed linen left a lot to be desired with several marks and the actual beds were very uncomfortable being twin beds pushed together but they were of differing heights. On the positive side the room was a really good size lots of room for us all. The spa and health club was really nice the staff all very positive and helpful. However the actual hotel staff we a little hit and miss most very helpful a few as miserable as sin and totally unwelcoming. A special shout out to the duty manager who was on duty when we arrived about 2.30 on Sunday afternoon who couldn't even be bothered to come and talk to us about the problem with the dogs and sent a message back to us that we could speak to the operations manager who would be available from about 4 o'clock. Not acceptable at least come and speak to customers if they have a problem !!!!!! I am afraid I will not consider staying there again nor would I recommend !!!!!

Matfen Hall replied: Dear Guest Tripadvisor is a great way to receive our guests feedback and I do take and use all feedback constructively, however I was very surprised by your comments, following your recent stay at Matfen Hall. We were aware that you were unhappy with the facilities for your two retriever dogs on the first evening and I ensured my whole team were aware of the problems, as you were staying with us for 5 nights. I myself spoke to you on three separate occasions during your stay. Whilst we are ‘dog friendly’ and do welcome dogs to Matfen Hall, as you mentioned in your review, not all areas are accessible for dogs, not only for hygiene reasons, but also not all our guests are dog lovers! The bedroom you occupied did have a ‘zip and link’ bed which is standard within our industry, as this allows flexibility to offer rooms as either a double or twin let. I am also surprised about your comments with regards to our linen, but will certainly review this with our Head Housekeeper. I am disappointed that you didn’t share this information with us during your stay, whilst speaking to members of my team or indeed myself, as this would have given us the opportunity to rectify any problems at the time. I am sorry you feel unable to return to Matfen Hall, but should you decide at some point in the future to visit us again, please let me know and I shall be happy to look after your reservation personally. Yours sincerely Bernard N Bloodworth Managing Director

Visited many times ate and stayed there too without complaint but called in to have a glass of wine recently as we are quite local and paid nearly £17 for 2 medium glasses of wine which were dreadful and rather than take them back we suffered in silence (big mistake ) instead I wrote to the hotel but got a rather flippant reply so other than local occasions won't be back Sorry

Matfen Hall replied: Thank you once again for sharing your feedback. I’m sorry that you have categorised my response as ‘flippant’, and I can assure you that this was not my intention when responding. As I alluded to in my previous reply; wine taste is very personal and subjective. While I’ve had some great feedback in the past regarding the wines that you were served, I do understand that individual tastes can and do vary. I can assure you that our bespoke, extensive wine list is sourced from reputable vineyards and developed with a local wine merchant with a wealth of knowledge and expertise. I’m sorry to read that you won’t choose to return to Matfen Hall, if you have a change of heart, please do let me know so that I may ensure you are well looked after. Kind regards, Peter J Dawson Operations Manager
