Anniversary Stay

CitrusReviews1, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
We stayed at Matfen Hall for our Wedding Anniversary in May. The grounds are beautiful on the drive towards the hall. We had a lovely welcome on arrival. The room and bathroom was perfect. We decided to book dinner in the Library restaurant in advance. I would recommend booking as the restaurant is very popular. The food and service was just excellent. The atmosphere is a bit quiet so some background music would be great. The next morning we decided to get up early to use the pool facilities. This was the only disappointment we had during our stay. The pool is very small and the loungers are very uncomfortable and not very clean. We did not stay long there as it started to get busy and felt very overcrowded. I would not pay to have a spa day here as I really don't think it is worth it. I can only comment on the pool facilities as I did not have any spa treatments. We also had room service breakfast and this was really good. Before we left we had lunch in The Conservatory Bar and this was really good. Would we stay again? Absolutely for the wonderful location, food and overnight stay but unfortunately we would not use the pool facilities again.

Matfen Hall replied: Dear Guest, Thank you for your feedback and it was lovely to read how much you enjoyed your stay and I shall certainly pass your kind comments on to my team. I was surprised and disappointed to read that the pool area was not to your liking, as we regularly receive great feedback within this area. I will of course speak to our Aqua Vitae Club Manager and bring your concerns to her attention regarding the loungers, as we haven’t received any comments regarding this before and I know she will want to ensure their usual high standards remain. Thank you again for your comments and I look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future. Yours Sincerely Bernard N Bloodworth Managing Director

Spa break

Dicka34, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
Myself, my 2 daughters-in-law and a friend came here for an overnight spa break, we arrived at 11.30 and although check-in wasn't until 3pm our bags were securely stored away while we had full use of the spa facilities. The pool is lovely, as is the jacuzzi. The actual spa experience was great, warm shower, aromatherapy room, steam room, cold shower, cold water in a bucket experience and then finally ice all over your body. The relaxation room is so tranquil and the facial and body massage are so relaxing. Evening meal was excellent as was breakfast the next morning, rooms are nice and beds are very comfortable, staff are very friendly and helpful, would definitely come back

Fantastic wedding venue

Absolutely stunning. Wonderful setting. The hotel is clean, attractive, historical, friendly and has a lovely atmosphere. I can't fault it. I was here to attend a friends wedding and it was just such a beautiful setting. The friendly staff couldn't be helpful enough and that coupled with the gorgeous surroundings made for a very happy memorable day. I loved it!

5th Wedding Anniversary stay

Stephanie C, Sunderland, United Kingdom
Stayed here for the 1st on Sunday 4th June for 1 night. We booked it a couple of weeks prior to our stay & must say the girls sorting this out for us were most helpful and a brilliant start. We booked an offer they had on at the time, £130 for 1 night incl 2 course meal in the conservatory & breakfast for us both. It was a special occassion for us as we were celebrating our 5th Wedding Anniversary that weekend & we try to go to different places & Matfen has been on our list. My Husband has played golf here a few times & ive been for afternoon tea & we have both attended an evening wedding reception before so we couldn't wait to stay over. Our anniversary wasnt acknowledged which was a little disappointing given usually you are left a bottle of wine or a glass of fizz (we we always have been in other hotels) however this obviously didnt spoil our stay its just a nicw touch. Our room was no. 15 just standard but lovely alothough it was a real hike to get there! Nice view over courtyard & nice modern feel to it. Loved the bathroom! The bed however was very hard so we didnt have a great sleep & i mentioned this in the comments card before leaving. Food in the conservatory was lovely, like others have mentioned service was a quite slow to start but food made up for it & we weren't in a hurry. Breakfast was lovely too in the library restaurant. My husband hired golf buggies & i accompanied him on the 1st day so i could enjoy the scenery & see the grounds whilst he played then our room wasnt quite ready so we headed to the spa for an hour. It was lovely & clean with ample chaning facilities & lockers. The pool was lovely & warm & the little spa area was a nice bonus. Few loungers round pool & also chairs dotted about too. Following day my Husband went for another round of golf & i spent afternoon in spa as i like how even after check out at 11am you can use facilities until 4pm for no extra charge. I got a lounger no problem. There was an aqua fit class on for about an hour but you are warned of these it wasnt relaxing but i enjoyed the music & watching them! It didnt bother me at all. Will definitely go back one day & maybe even upgrade next time!
