3 nights stay at Maften hall brilliant in every way. Food/service in the library restaurant brilliant. Breakfast very enjoyable every morning. Egg florentine fantastic. Spa treatments very good . Can't wait to return.

Stayed here a few times over the years and have never been disappointed. The rooms are lovely, facilities great and food is amazing! We actually got engaged here and will always look to come back for a luxury stay. Staff are all wonderful. Would highly recommend a stay

Fabulous wedding venue

Excellent staff, beautifully hotel and grounds and top class food. Made our daughters wedding an experience to remember. This four star hotel is not pretentious, the staff are very friendly and no request is too much trouble. Our room was very comfortable with all the amenities we could want, full sized ironing board and a decent hair dryer make a difference when preparing for the big day. Breakfast was very good and the service prompt even though the hotel was fully booked. We couldn't fault anything during our stay and will definitely be staying again in the future.

Customer service appalling/non existent- hot stone treatment was good

I have just got back from having a hot stone massage which was really good. However, I did nearly walk out. I found the person on the reception desk, uninterested, lazy and unfriendly. I walked in and she said "How can I help you" I told her my name and she said " go into the waiting at the end of the corridor-its through the double door". No effort to welcome or say anything at all. I went to the room to find 2 guest in there who had clearly had treatments, it was dark and supposed to be a relaxation room. I was anything but relaxed. At that point 2 mins after my treatment time, the therapist came to get me. Again she was okay, asked me a lot of medical questions and didn't fill in any forms, which is unusual in a Spa. I am a clinician so I did wonder what type of training she had and if she really would have understood had I said yes to any of the questions. She didn't ask if I was pregnant however. The session went well not the best hot stone I have had but it was good. No complaints with massage. When I left I stood by the reception desk to be asked YES? I said do you have a receipt? "I can hand write one was her reply". So be it. Then handed me a receipt which was printed already from the telephone payment yesterday. I think if you want to improve the SPA. You really must have better customer service training. She did not welcome me or say did you enjoy that? It was good to have your business. NOTHING. Very inexperienced staff and I won't be back unfortunately. You've lost me. Such a shame.

Disappointing stay

After reading all the excellent reviews of Matfen Hall, I was looking forward to my stay but in the end was somewhat disappointed. I was checked in by a very friendly and helpful receptionist and although my room was not quite ready as I had arrived early I was made most welcome. My room was available within a few minutes of the allotted time, however one of our party who had requested a disabled room was very disappointed to find the room specifications promised were not suitable for a disabled person and they were unable to use the washing facilities as the “walk in shower” had no supports and had a lip which was impossible for a disabled person to overcome. A lovely and very helpful lady receptionist tried very hard to accommodate our friend but unfortunately Maften Hall apparently has no disabled rooms available in the section of the building we were accommodated in and suggested our friend may want to use the excellent shower facilities in the leisure area which was not really acceptable, it is extremely disappointing in the 21st century to find a place of such a high reputation and stranding does not have disabled rooms. My room was extremely comfortable, very well furnished with all the extras you would expect, if fact in many years of staying in hotels all over the world this must rank in one of the best. The evening meal was not what I would have expected with the wrong starter being brought to one of our party and my starter being served with toast missing from the pate, which was brought very quickly when I asked for it. The main course of chicken was dry & tasteless and the young waiters although trying their best appeared very inexperienced. The bar staff were excellent and even in a busy period they ensured all were attended to within a reasonable time. Our breakfast involved a wait for a table but this is not unreasonable and we noticed a number of guests were accommodated in an overspill facility, the breakfast was enjoyable however we did notice when leaving the breakfast room a couple who arrived a few minutes after the time window for breakfast had expired were spoken to quite rudely by a member of the breakfast staff. With such excellent reviews this is possibly just a one off drop in standards and I would not even try to attempt to suggest that others not visit this beautiful house but I am afraid I will not return.

I’m disappointed that our accessible rooms were not tailored to the specific requirements of your party. We do have two hotel rooms with many accessible features, including raised beds, grab rails in both the bedroom and bathroom area and an accessible bath seat. We are currently in the process of organising a re-fit of another one of our accessible rooms with a wet room. I will review the experience of your party member with our reception and booking team to ensure that going forward, we are absolutely ensuring that our guests booking accessible rooms are doing so with confidence that it will fully meet their expectations. I appreciate your kind comments relating to the House Manager, who as you have stated did make considerable effort to accommodate your guests in the most suitable room available. I’m surprised to read your comments relating to the Library Restaurant, as this is often a highlight of our guest experience.
