Made our not so good trip, worth while

emma88heyes, Leicester, United Kingdom
We came across Matfen Hall when we were staying in another hotel which we really didnt like and were looking for somewhere else to stay. Matfen Hall is very striking with very impressive views, and was just the kind of place we were looking to stay on our trip around Northumberland. When we arrived we knew we'd found a winner! My husband is a keen golfer so he has already planned to come back and play. I loved the hotel and its whole decor and layout. The staff were very friendly and helpful at check in. Once we'd put our bags in our room (the room was gorgeous - spacey, light and a nice big bathroom), we went down to the gym/spa area and had to buy some swimwear as we didnt bring any with us. This was all easy and straight forward and went into the sauna and just relaxed. We had booked in for dinner, and I have to say - the food was amazing! My starter - parmesan souffle was so tasty. The staff in the restaurant were very good and attentive. We went back to the bar for a couple of drinks later and the staff there were great. Breakfast was very good too considering it was busy. Overall we are definitely coming back and recommend Matfen to everyone.

Golf and spa break

Visited Nov 16 , on an overnight golf and spa break 2 couples The golf course was pretty waterlogged but to be expected at time of year Spa is average, the jacuzzi was cold the aromatherapy room out of order The service is very poor, our dinner reservation was delayed nearly an hour and they forgot to bring 2 of our breakfasts!! We ate nearly 20 mins apart The food itself however is fantastic just poor service let itself down Pricing for drinks is astronomical £8 glass of wine £28 / bottle, or magners at 7 quid vodka redbull £11 Rooms are ok, pretty standard if not a bit disappointing for price you pay It's a nice hotel but it's service and pricing let's itself down, doubtful if I'd ever go back

Matfen Hall replied: Thank you for sharing your feedback, following your recent stay at Matfen Hall. I was of course sorry to read your comments about certain aspects of your visit and please accept my sincere apologies for any disappointment you experienced. I have spoken to our Aqua Vitae Club Manager regarding your concerns about the temperature of the Jacuzzi and as this is something that is tested periodically throughout the day, we have been able to look back at our record sheets, which shows that the Jacuzzi was at a constant temperature of 36-37 degrees throughout the day. Likewise she was not aware that the Aromatherapy room was out of order – I am sorry if this was the case – and she shall take this up with her team. I was pleased to read how much you enjoyed your food whilst dining with us and again I am sorry you felt the service was not as it should have been. My Restaurant Manager is reviewing this with her team, to ensure our usual high standards remain. I was surprised to read your comments regarding our drinks prices as we are certainly competitive with similar venues in the area. Our glasses of house wine start from £4.70 per glass, with bottles of house wine from £19.95 per bottle and a single vodka and red bull is £6.60. Thank you again for your feedback and I do hope you will return to Matfen Hall at some point in the future, where I would welcome the opportunity to restore your ‘faith’ with us. Yours Sincerely Bernard N Bloodworth Managing Director

Lovely place. .

Stephen D,
Second visit to this hotel and it's just lovely. You almost feel like you are the lord/lady of the Manor! I need to start off with some of the less positive things from our stay which dropped the rating to very good as opposed to anything higher (harsh I know). The pool area on both days was just full of kids, as in full. Screaming, bombing etc and the adults weren't much quieter. I'm assuming it was linked to a wedding that was going on when we stayed. Our room (8) was next to a door on the corridor so every time someone walked by it freaked and slammed shut. Lastly, room above and the infamous floor walker which meant we heard stamping late on and early on the morning. So, the less positive stuff out of the way and onto the great things. Staff are amazing and this place, just so so friendly. They seem to have a good mix of local people and those from the wider parts of the globe. Food in the library is amazing, just perfect. Leisure facilities are good and despite the racket from those guests they allow in ;-) it's a real treat. Breakfast very good so please please stay here. If you can upgrade to a deluxe room or higher as they are so luxurious. Well done to those who work behind the scenes to look after all of the guests.

Matfen Hall replied: It was great to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Matfen Hall recently and I was delighted to learn that overall you enjoyed your stay with us. I am sorry you were disturbed by other guests later on in the evening and had you brought this to our attention at the time of stay, my team would have endeavoured to alleviate the problem as best they could. To allow all our guests the opportunity to use our spa facilities, children’s access to the pool area is between 10.00am – 12.00pm and 4.00pm – 6.00pm. Outside of these times, is adult only, which is detailed in all confirmation letters prior to arrival and within our bedroom directories. Thank you for your feedback which I shall use constructively with my team and we look forward to welcoming you back to Matfen Hall, on many more occasions to come. Kind regards Bernard N Bloodworth Managing Director

I booked a winter date night package and added some spa treatments for myself and my fiancée. The spa staff were friendly yet professional, the hotel staff likewise, room 8 fit the bill, food in the Library was superb, all in all a very well spent 24 hours at Matfen Hall.

Stayed here as a treat at halfway through Hadrian's Wall. Rooms and bathroom were very comfortable. Breakfast and dinner were also very good. Grounds are beautiful. Staff were very helpful. It's in a lovely part of the country
