Best afternoon tea ever

Richard M, Carlisle, United Kingdom
As a couple we often find that the traditional afternoon tea contains too many sweet sickly items and not enough in the way of savories. Matfen offers a brilliant and innovative solution to this problem. We were able to order a conventional afternoon tea and a 'Gentleman's afternoon tea' to share between us. In place of sandwiches the latter contains a Scotch egg, Pork pie (both large and utterly delicious), cheese topped scone along with the usual fruit scone etc. When combined with the conventional tea we were both able to more than satisfy our hunger and preference for more savoury items. As expected the service was excellent - and we are already planning a return visit.

Excellent stay at Matfen

Duncan M, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
My wife and I have just enjoyed an excellent two night break at Matfen Hall Hotel. The hotel itself is stunning to look at with its open outlook, especially after the heavy snow earlier this week that left it in a winter wonderland setting. The standard room was a good size, well fitted out and comfortable. The staff were friendly, informative and efficient. The food was excellent, especially in the surroundings of the Library. The spa was extensive with the pool, sauna, etc and the well equipped gym and the fitness room. I cannot comment on the golf course as it was covered with snow but the hotel itself was certainly worth it by itself.

Great friday night food + spa

Heather B, Newcastle Upon Tyne
We booked the Friday night deal which included a deluxe room, dinner, breakfast, bottle of Prosecco, chocolates and Elemis spa goodies. We arrived shortly after 3pm to make the most of it and I enjoyed the pool, jacuzzi and thermal rooms whilst it wasn't too busy. We were able to have our prosecco when we wanted so I collected this from the bar and took it back to our room. Dinner in the library was both a fantastic setting and delicious food delivered by great service. Breakfast was much busier but also very tasty. The room was a good size and layout, the only negative point being the bed and the pillows, the bed is not very long, and the pillows were a bit hard. We didn't sleep too well but other than that really enjoyed our stay and it definitely felt like a luxury night away. We thought the Friday night deal was good value for money for what we got. The chocolates were nice and the Elemis goodies might become christmas presents! We would consider visiting again, just for the spa and food if nothing else, I would recommend the venison and my husband the cheese souffle starter!

Very relaxing enjoyable stay

Heatherthevet, Glasgow, Scotland
We had a two night midweek stay for my birthday. The staff were terrific, so friendly and helpful. We were originally above the dance studio, which was quite noisy, and when I asked if we could perhaps transfer to a different room not only did they find me a different room at once, it was an upgrade, they helped us move, and didn't make us feel bad about it at all. The room was massive, the bed was very comfortable with proper feather pillows, everything we needed was provided for. The bathrooms in both the rooms were superb. The spa facilities were great, immaculately clean, well managed and not intimidating. Dinner in the conservatory was relaxed, affordable, and absolutely delicious. We didn't try the fine dining in the Library Restaurant. I would love to be lucky enough to stay here again.

Luxurious country house hotel

We had dinner, bed and breakfast here to break our car journey from southern England back home to Northeast Scotland. The hotel is immaculate, the staff friendly and helpful and the food for dinner was beautiful, served in the atmospheric library. Our waiter Piotyr was charming . Although the dining room was quite grand it was not at all stuffy. The room had lots of space including a large vestibule area so luggage, winter coats etc didn’t clutter the bedroom and where my husband used the full size ironing board. I am sorry we didn’t have time to use the spa facilities on this occasion as they looked super.
