Book Launch - "Stone in the Water" by Timothy Pitt
Saturday 10 October 2026 | 4.30pm-5.30pm | Ad Gefrin
"Stone in the Water" is a new book which looks at the shifting influence from the Celts to the Anglo-Saxons, especially within the powerhouse of Northumbria.
It follows three tightly woven strands:
- The emergence of the Anglo-Saxons
- The establishment in them of Christian faith
- The impact of Anglo-Saxon Christians on individuals and wider culture today.
Stone in the Water follows on from Echoes of Celtic Christians, also written by Timothy Pitt. Watching the Celtic Christians recede into the mist after the Synod of Whitby in 664, it seeks to answer the inevitable question: "What happened next?"
The book looks at who those early Anglo-Saxons were and their rise to power in Britain. It looks at their response to the message of the Cross in writing, in art and in their lives. It looks at the attitudes and actions of the Anglo-Saxons, the Celtic Christians and the Church in Rome in the melting pot of Britain. Throughout, it looks at their influences on us today - how their intellects, imaginations and efforts can encourage us in our own thinking and deep-heart yearning.
Stone in the Water has over 40 colour photographs (and features Ad Gefrin) - some with a clear story and some more subtle.
You are invited for tea, coffee and traybake from 4.30pm followed by a talk at 5pm. Book signing available afterwards in the Ad Gefrin Shop.
For anyone who might like to join the 3pm Distillery Tour & Tasting beforehand or enjoy a Twilight Tour or Dinner with Tasting afterwards, tickets can be booked via our website.
Anyone who would like to join us for dinner in our Beodern restaurant can make table reservations here.
Timothy Pitt is from northern Bernicia in old Northumbria (Edinburgh, Scotland in today's parlance) and a happy Corenkyn of Ad Gefrin. He works as a lawyer, geeks out over the early medieval period and delights in exploring his relationship with God all the while uplifted by the love of his long-suffering wife who 'does' both compassion and eye-rolling in a healthy, equal measure.
