The Northumberland Coast

'For anyone used to Newquay or Brighton, the

endless, empty beaches come as an exhilarating

surprise'

The Observer

Druridge BayNorthumberland is home to unspoilt, almost deserted beaches of mile upon mile of soft golden sands, punctuated by ancient castles and fortifications. This is a landscape which resonates with drama, history and intrigue, much of it designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The AONB unfolds south of the historic border town of Berwick upon Tweed - 39 miles of sweeping sands, rolling dunes, high rocky cliffs, isolated islands and iconic landmarks, including the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, its castle jutting out to sea, visible for miles around.

Alnmouth

'Northumberland contains

the most exhilarating

stretch of coast in England'

The Telegraph

Experience the awe-inspiring atmosphere of the unique Bamburgh Beach, with Bamburgh Castle perched majestically on the dunes, commanding spectacular views of the Farne Islands, 7th century retreat of St Cuthbert and home today to thousands of grey seals and nesting sea birds. Stroll along the expansive sands of Beadnell Bay or Embleton Bay, with Dunstanburgh Castle towering dramatically over the golden beach, often with barely another soul in sight. Wander along the cliff tops to Craster, typical of the pretty fishing villages that pepper the Northumberland Coast and famous for its excellent kippers. Further south, tee-off at Alnmouth Golf course, one of England's oldest, located next to the picturesque village, right on the beach.

Kitesurfers on the North Northumberland CoastFurther south lies the modern marina of Amble and the beautiful beaches at Cresswell, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and Druridge Bay, home to rare birdlife which typifies the richness of wildlife along the waters and sands of the spectacular coastline. Seaton Sluice is the southern most village on the Northumberland coast, with a fascinating harbour steeped in history.

It's easy to explore this stunning landscape. Follow the brown 'castle and waves' signs by car from Druridge Bay to Belford or get on your bike - the Coast and Castles long distance cycleway and quiet country lanes that weave along the coast are ideal for exploring at a slower pace.
