Take aim and step into the shoes of a Roman archer at this exciting hands-on experience at the Roman Army Museum.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the ancient Roman Fort of Magna, visitors will have the opportunity to test their skills with a bow and arrow under the guidance of members of the renowned Ermine Street Guard. Learn the basics of Roman archery, take aim at the target and see if you can hit the mark with the precision and accuracy expected of soldiers serving on Rome's northern frontier.
Archery played a vital role in the Roman army, and Magna has a particularly fascinating connection to these specialist troops. The fort was once home to a cohort of Hamian archers, elite soldiers who travelled all the way from Syria to serve in Britannia. Their presence on Hadrian's Wall is a powerful reminder of the diversity of the Roman Empire and the people who helped defend its distant borders.
Throughout the day, visitors can learn more about the lives of these remarkable soldiers and discover how archers were trained, equipped and deployed across the empire. Members of the Ermine Street Guard will be on hand to share their knowledge and demonstrate the skills that made Roman archers such an important part of the military machine.
Younger visitors can also enjoy a creative activity by colouring in their own Hamian archer while learning about the diverse cohorts stationed along Hadrian's Wall. It's a fun and engaging way to explore the stories of the men who travelled thousands of miles to live and serve in Roman Britain.
Whether you're competing for the highest score, discovering the history of Magna's Syrian archers, or simply enjoying a family day out, this event offers a unique opportunity to connect with the people and stories behind one of Britain's most iconic Roman landscapes.
Join us at the Roman Army Museum and find out if you have what it takes to match the skill, focus and accuracy of a Roman archer.
