Lowry in Berwick
Open Wednesday to Sunday until 22 March 2026 | 11am - 4pm | The Storehouse, Berwick Barracks
Lowry in Berwick brings together four works connected to L.S. Lowry’s long-standing relationship with the town and its coastline, marking the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death in 2026.
At the centre of the exhibition is Spittal, Berwick (1960), a rarely seen pencil sketch depicting a boat and figures on Spittal Beach. Recently acquired by The Maltings (Berwick) Trust, the work goes on public display for the first time at The Storehouse, Berwick Barracks. Alongside it are two works from Berwick’s Town Collection — Old Berwick (1936) and Beach Scene (1954) — together with a further sketch on loan from a private collection, bringing these four works together for the first time.
Although Lowry is widely associated with the industrial landscapes of Manchester and the North West, he developed a deep affinity with Berwick-upon-Tweed from the mid-1930s onwards, returning regularly throughout his life. The town’s harbour, streets, coastline and expansive views across the North Sea provided a different but equally compelling subject for his work. Lowry produced more than twenty works depicting Berwick, drawn to its atmosphere, its people and the meeting point between land and sea.
Within the exhibition, Lowry’s works are presented alongside other pieces grounded in place and people, creating a dialogue between artworks that reflect shared themes of observation, landscape and everyday life. Together, they offer a chance to see Berwick through Lowry’s eyes while considering how artists continue to respond to place and community today.
The exhibition takes place at The Storehouse, Berwick Barracks, as part of the wider Living Barracks project — an ongoing programme bringing art, heritage and community activity back into this historic site ahead of its full reopening in 2027.
Lowry in Berwick offers a rare opportunity to experience works connected directly to the town, and to reflect on the enduring relationship between artist, landscape and place.
