The Alnwick Garden is unveiling an original piece of music this month, commissioned from a Northumberland composer in celebration of its silver anniversary.
Blossom captures the sights, sounds and stories of The Garden throughout its rich history. Created by Thropton-based folk musician and record producer Ian Stephenson, the piece is rooted in the region’s landscape, culture and traditional music.
Arriving on 22nd July for one night only, the 15-minute piece will be performed by the Coquet Concert Band and take visitors on an immersive musical journey through The Garden.
From the sounds of water cascading into a stream to dark and mysterious music inspired by poisonous plants, the piece captures the character and atmosphere of The Garden before ending with a soaring final theme depicting the venue in full bloom.
Speaking on the piece, Mr Stephenson said: “It has been a pleasure to create this original composition for The Alnwick Garden’s silver anniversary.
“When working on the piece, I took inspiration from the elements that make the venue so enchanting for visitors. Coming to The Garden has always been captivating, and I wanted that sense of discovery to be reflected in the music.
“I hope listeners will experience each of the four themes, Water, Busy Bees, Poison and Blossom, as if they are moving through The Garden itself, perhaps remembering what it was like to visit for the very first time.”
This unique event forms part of a series of celebrations taking place throughout the year, reflecting The Garden’s 25-year reign as one of the North East’s most inclusive, sustainable and community-focussed visitor attractions. It is also a chance to look towards the future, as exciting new developments are announced throughout 2026.
Mark Brassell, CEO at The Alnwick Garden, said: “As part of our 25th anniversary programme, we are delighted to bring people together for what promises to be a memorable evening of music and festivities.
“This concert reflects so much of what The Garden stands for: creativity, community, and a deep connection to nature.
“We especially look forward to unveiling Ian Stephenson’s anniversary composition, which perfectly celebrates the spaces, stories and natural elements that make it so special.”
The outdoor anniversary concert will feature a packed programme of music including film classics, TV favourites, Northumbrian folk tunes and a triumphant and rousing Last Night of the Proms-style finale. Between the main performances, local musicians will provide live entertainment, adding to the vibrant festival atmosphere.
Refreshments and a fully stocked bar will be available on site, with guests encouraged to bring picnic blankets and chairs and settle in for an evening of music, celebration, and summer atmosphere.
Tickets are available via The Alnwick Garden website, priced at £25 per person and £15 for under-16’s.
