If you need to get away from it all, come to Northumberland's countryside.

Northumberland was recently named by the Campaign for Rural England as the country's most tranquil spot and if you spend any time here you'll begin to realise why.

We have a network of isolated villages and towns, connected by winding B-roads that cross some stunning countryside.

We're proud of our quiet life up here and we know that our visitors appreciate the chance to take stock, relax or get active in the heart of some fantastic scenery.

Northumberland is England's big sky county - a place where you can walk for miles and not see another soul.

We've got not one but two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and our own National Park which offers some fantastic examples of rare and endangered species.

The dramatic, heather covered landscape of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty was Britain's first UNESCO European and Global GeoPark. Our other Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is the Northumberland Coast, miles of golden sandy beaches and bays, most with at least one majestic castle close by.

Northumberland National Park is the UK's least visited national park so there is nowhere better for escaping the crowds. As well as outdoor pursuits like walking and mountain biking, the park also offers perfect picnic spots and places where you can stop and breathe pure, clean air and enjoy wonderful views.

Hadrian's Wall Country overlaps the southern tip of Northumberland National Park and contains the most spectacular upland sections of the World Heritage Site.

Close to the national park lies Kielder Water & Forest Park, Northern Europe's largest man-made lake, with its tranquil waters and dense forests, and Wild Redesdale.

Head to North Northumberland to explore the turbulent history of the Border region, the countryside here is dotted with Pele Towers designed to keep out bandits and robbers, and explore the meandering River Tweed before experiencing the stunning Cheviot Hills.
