Cycling in Northumberland

Miles of stunning scenery, deserted roads and friendly pubs and cafes to enjoy en route - that is why Northumberland makes for great cycling country.

Getting on your bike in Northumberland is a delight and there are a number of dedicated cycleways that will keep you fit and allow you to enjoy the stunning scenery from the comfort of your saddle.

For those that want nothing more than to take their family or friends on a relaxing bike ride, Northumberland coast and countryside offer many miles of safe country roads and car free tracks.

Kielder Water & Forest Park has an extensive network of off-road tracks, perfect for family cycling holidays, as well as the Lakeside Way – a 26 mile trail that encircles the shoreline of Kielder Water.

Then there's the more strenuous long distance cycle routes of Northumberland. For a start we have the northern stretch of the Pennine Cycleway, England's longest 'challenge' cycle route running through Haltwhistle, Bellingham and Wooler. You could also try Hadrian's Cycleway which stretches the length of our World Heritage Site taking in Roman forts and temples, market towns and quaint villages.

There's also the Reivers Cycle Route starting in Cumbria and running through what was once Northumberland's bandit country before finishing at Tynemouth.

And of course, there's the Coast and Castles cycle route which showcases some of our best coastal assets including the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and Bamburgh Castle as it weaves its way between Newcastle and Edinburgh.
