Cool time at kielder

Bruce S,
Just completed a four day stay at Kielder water and forest park...stayed in the wonderfully appointed new lodges which included a hot tub which my wife and myself made ample use of ...even in the snow. The lodge would sleep 4 although there was only 2 of us even so it seemed like excellent value. The lodges contain every facility for self catering missing nothing...theres even a dishwasher....the site is stunning ,a forest surrounding a man made lake (reservoir) with 26 miles of tracks around the perimeter, suitable for walking ,running or cycling....beautifully serene with very little light pollution at night also a small gym and a very pleasant swimming pool on site....the bird of prey centre is excellent.

Wonderful retreat

issy70, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Visited here for midweek break with family and our dog (who loved his walks) We were in a superior 3 bedroom spacious lodge with hot tub (which we certainly made good use of)the views over the reservoir were amazing this is such a peaceful place But still offers plenty things to do there is a small onsight shop ,play areas ,ice rink ,spa ‘ crazy golf etc and when we were there the reindeer arrived and the enchanted forest was being made ready unfortunately the ferry was not operating (Stops in october) we felt the staff in reception could have been more attentive ! We went in a couple of times to ask questions and the staff on both occasions were too busy talking small talk to obviously regular visitors and ignored us til we were forced to interrupt ( not good customer service) that apart we lved the lace and will certainly return

Standards have dropped, disappointing.

Reception and bar staff were great, very friendly and helpful. When we got to our lodge we noticed the toilet hadn't been cleaned, called reception and they sorted it within a few minutes. However, as we settled in we noticed that the kitchen floor hadn't been swept and various other cleanliness issues. Not wanting to be complaining further on the first day of our break, we just sorted it ourselves. This was our 5th stay at Kielder, this time we opted for a new lodge. Beautifully set up, tasteful decor and a great kitchen area. Hot tub was a good size, however it was right by the main access road which is used by the service team as well as other guests, so privacy was nil. A few lodges had some willow screening, but most seemed overlooked by their neighbours. Outside lights on all night with no option to turn off so dark sky viewing wasn't possible from the patio. 5th but sadly the last time we will be back to stay.

Lodge not clean.

janesmith24, Lancashire, United Kingdom
We stayed in Lodge 33. On first impression, it looked wonderful; large, bright, well equipped, big tv, flame effect fire, leather sofas, large patio doors. Closer inspection, however, revealed a different story. The kitchen work surfaces and door handles were sticky, there were splashes of tomato sauce on the kitchen floor, weeks of dirt and dust in corners and on the skirting boards (we all know dust is mostly skin cells, right?) hairs in the bathroom, dirty, used tissues under the bed, dirty toilet seat, dirty footprints on the bathroom floor, crumbs and bits in the fridge. The whole place smelled of stale cooking. The wooden and tiled floors were gritty to walk on. In the cupboard was a rechargeable vacuum cleaner with a flat battery and no charging point. I complained to reception, who said that all the cleaning staff had left but they sent round 2 lads from maintenance with a Henry Hoover. They took photos of all the problems, and I cleaned one bathroom, the kitchen, bedroom, and lounge for our use. One of them told me that the cleaning supervisor had recently left, and standards had slipped since then. It looked like the lodge had been given a very quick flick round; sheets changed, cushions plumped, but no real cleaning done. When I enter a holiday let, I do not want to see any trace at all of previous occupants. I want it spotless. I do not expect to have to spend the first 2 hours cleaning. The manager was very apologetic indeed, and agreed that is was not acceptable. It is such a shame because it was a new lodge (2017) and it could have been fabulous with more care and attention to detail. The setting and the scenery are beautiful, but we will not be returning.

Straker Lodge, Kielder Forest

Monalois, Stroud, United Kingdom
Stayed at Straker Lodge in the Kielder Forest for one week and had the most fabulous week. Fantastic lodge with everything you could ever need and more. Bonus, wood fired hot tub, wood fired burner inside, all windows for spectacular views day and night. Walking in the forest and around the lake on your doorstep. Lodge very modern and clean and all appliances are top of the range.
