visited kielder yesterday mainly to see the ospreys, but unfortunately the volunteer staff weren't there with their telescopes...but, nevertheless my husband has his own spotting scope so was able to pick them up in their nests for himself...we've been the last few years to view them so he knew roughly where they should be - and there they were sitting happily. Had lunch here at the boat inn and our table overlooked the lake (lovely) The young man who greeted and served us was really friendly and cheery which makes all the difference to me. Food is reasonably priced £5 for baked pot which is pretty well same as most places so not overpriced, but, as we both only wanted a baked potato and didn't want a dessert i can only comment on basics - I had the chilli topping (quite spicy) but it was is rijo which is a favourite of ours so that was a plus too Overall very pleasant

Excellent food and service

I was staying at the Leaplish lodges over the weekend, and ventured down to the Boat Inn on a few occasions. I initially had nachos with beef chilli, which was a sizeable portion and oozing with cheese. I returned on Sunday evening for a roast dinner, and was not disappointed. A sizeable plate of turkey, Yorkshire, potatoes, a separate plate of veg, and extra gravy - very tasty and filling. Only grumble was the veg was all greens, with no carrots or swede, but decent all the same. The drinks prices were reasonable, and Robert looked after us on every visit. Definitely recommend the place.

Having had morning coffee at this establishment, we ventured further up Kielder water for a walk and decided to return to The Boat Inn for lunch, especially as it enjoys a great location with lovely views over the water. We chose a light lunch of a Coronation Chicken Sandwich, a main course Chicken Caesar salad and a portion of chips. When the waitress brought the sandwich it had been incorrectly sent on white bread instead of wholemeal. The waitress soon took this away and it was replaced, however, for £7.50 there was a poor amount of filling, the chips were only lukewarm and the Caesar salad was dreadful. As everyone knows, Caesar salad is should be served with crispy Little Gem lettuce, however mine was served on 4 large flat green leaves. In addition the plate was overwhelmed with croutons. I ate probably ten pieces and this still left over ten in the bowl. Finally, when Chicken is served with a Caesar Salad it is usually chunky, but on this offering it was slices. I told the bar staff about the salad and they immediately discounted the meal, however the Chef sent a message that he had used Little Gem lettuce. For sure, they have a problem in the kitchen at this establishment, where errors are made both in orders and quality. I know others have said how much they enjoyed their visits, but for us this was a disappointment. The only good element was the service.

Lovely friendly service

Our first meal here was very quiet. The staff gave us extra attention and brought our drinks to our table. The music in the pub was great and the food was delicious. I had the Thai green curry and would definitely recommend it. Even when it was busy and there was more of a wait for food but still as delicious.
