Sunday lunch was terrific but get in early

Lisa Jane M, Durham
We came for Sunday lunch after we vacated our lodge and pleased we arrived early as due to a large wedding party the seating was restricted. Our table had wonderful views of the reservoir and the staff were very friendly and accommodating despite it being very busy. The Sunday lunch was absolutely delicious with man size portions. Several of our party chose the lamb and got three thick slices cooked to perfection. Always good to get fresh veg and not a frozen vegetable in sight. We were stuffed when we left and would certainly recommend a trio to Kielder for the Sunday lunch alone.

Post-walk refreshment in the sunshine

We enjoyed our drinks sitting outside the Boat Inn after a walk/cycle along the Kielder waterside path. The seating area is equipped with new wooden furniture and parasols. Inside there are views across the water and is equipped for families as smaller chairs/tables are on offer for younger diners - both inside and out. We didn't stay to eat but the menu looked extensive and priced as expected when they have a captive audience. Am sure they do a roaring trade in high season. We noted later that takeaway coffee/tea and soft drinks are also on sale in the shop which some visitors were enjoying while sat outside the pub - so there are other outlets at busy times. Pleasant spot for a drink and a rest.

Good food, great scenery

We were visiting to go to the Kielder Observatory and called in for a coffee. It was lovely, and we decided to go back for dinner. Good menu, great venue, views of Kielder Water stunning.

Could be so much better

I visited the Boat Inn for a lunch break, on a Classic Motoring Tour that I was taking part in. We were supposed to have a bowl of soup, and a sandwich....pretty simple, and impossible to get wrong, you might think, although we were part of a group of 80. A Soup tureen capable of feeding about 20 people was supplied, along with some 40 dried out rolls. The food ran out very early; and there were hardly any staff on hand to ask what was going on. Eventually, a gentleman appeared, who promptly accused people of eating 'more that their fair share'....I saw little evidence to support his claim. We later learnt that the Manager/Chef was opn holiday......quite convenient, as this was Mothers Day! (The restaurant, however, must have been the quietest restaurant in the UK on this particular Mothers day; I wonder why?) It's a real shame...the premises and location have clearly had a lot of money spent on making it a fantastic place; let down by appalling service and management. This place could be so much better..........
